I haven't been a fan of portable gaming since the days of my Turbo-Express... But I recently picked up a used Sony Clie running Palm OS, and am actually enjoying playing all kinds of simple games on it. Now I really want a pocket PC. But the more I think about it, the more it seems like a better idea to just get a PSP for cheaper.

So what are your thoughts on the PSP? I would use it for gaming (obviously) and watching movies (already have a 1 gig memory stick duo from my camera), probably only a few hours at a time.

Any comments on graphics? Sound? Video playback? Battery life I've read plenty of reviews but I wanna hear opinions from my fellow computer users.

I've just picked one up this month and I have to say, its awesome. There may not be too many games out right now to make it an enjoyable gamimg experience, there are plenty of games to come. Lumines alone makes the PSP worth it :D

If you want portable gaming, it doesn't get any better. I've never seen better graphics on a better screen with better sound on any portable device smaller than a laptop. Battery life is a little on the low side, averaging I'd say 5-6 hours per charge.

Nope. There's absolutely no threads on the Anandtech forums about the PSP whatsoever. You certainly won't find any if you use the search feature. Nope, nope, nope!

In typical Anandtech fashion, 8 useful replies and one smartass. I'm sure EVERYTHING has been discussed already at some point, so lets just close the forum down.

For those of you who have a REAL opinion, anybody use it for watching movies? How well does it do for that?

Movies look very good.

With a 1Gb MS Duo card you will be able to fit 3 movies and be able to watch them all in one charge.

Games are stunning.

a buddy of mine got one and it looks suuuuuwweeeeeett......i haven't really played it yet (he had the demo disc), so i can't comment on that. but man, that display looks damn nice.

If you need portable gaming (which I don't really see the need for) it's a good system.

What is the appeal of Lumines? I bought it for my PSP but it doesn't seem that great. I'm pretty good at it and can play it for about an hour a game but it doesn't have the appeal of Tetris or Bombliss.

one thing I really dislike about the psp: It's a chore to hold, it's very uncomfortable to hold. When you hold it, it feels like you really don't want to drop it, scratch it, put fingerprints on it, etc. That in itself makes the device very undesirable to hold.

The button positioning SUCKS. The Start button is so far, that it's impossible to pause the game unless you want to mess up your game (like when you're racing, u'll crash because the damn start button is so far away, that you have to release the buttons that you're holding in order to push the damn start button).

Overall, it's the most undesirable device I've held ever. It hurts my wrists, and puts strain on my tendinitis right wrist.

But damn does it look badass, graphics are awesome, screen is friggin cool.
