I disagree. While I generally hate sony products the PS2 kicked ass whether you like it or not. The Nintendo DS is NOT the next Gameboy, the next Gameboy is already in the works. The DS was some stupid idea like the Virtual Boy, remember that? Ugh! The PSP so far seems to be the best portable game player out no buts about it. I have seen NFS for both systems and the PSP, while a different game, blows away the DS. So what if its proprietary? What handheld isnt? Were are the DS games? I got tired of playing Madden 2005. PSP had 20 games on the shelves 2 weeks before release in the US!

I've been playing around with the MP3, photos, and the Spiderman2 movie. This thing rocks! I'm just blown away by the screen and how nice everything looks. The stock headphones are actually pretty comfortable for me but I'll be using my PX100. I put couple of MP3 and pictures on the included memory stick and it works great. I can't wait for my 512mb memory stick pro duo from ZZF to arrive so I can put my own movies in it. I'm in process of converting some of my DVDs into Mpeg4 format and will store them on my HD so I don't have to convert later on.

I don't think Nintendo is the one that needs to worry. This unit is definitely designed and targeted towards the older crowd. I think Apple, Creative, and others should be more worried than Nintendo. If this thing had TV tuner and harddrive, it would be complete. I bet Sony already has plans for that.

The PSP is aimed at an audience that doesn't even play handheld games...you know, people that actually have $250 and play games on the train or on the bus...

This isn't Japan.

PSP isn't just game machine. It's portable multi-media machine. It has the potential to do for Sony what iPod did for Apple. Think of it as Sony's new Walkman for this generation.

No, I'm content with seeing it as a flop. No one wants a swiss army knife. The only people that are drooling over this thing are generally folks that can't afford one (the tweens). Older gamers generally don't mess with handheld games. You guys are the classic early adopters. More power to you guys, but your opinions are the exception rather than the rule. The PSP will flop. Bank on it.

we don't know if it's gonna flop. if sony pour enough cash to support it then it's gonna survive. In my opinion the PSP and DS are not targeting the same group of ppl. I think DS is better for kids of college and under while PSP is more suitable for ppl of college and above. It makes more sense for me to buy a PSP than a PDA. Flash memory price is always going down while capacity is going up and that'll help a lot since UMD is proprietory.

Um, i'm 39, hardly a tween and I own pretty much every console, handheld, latest PPC, ipod you name it. I am a gamer to the max and have been since the '70s and I can honestly say the PSP rocks. My DS had potential but Nintendon't dropped the ball on it with total lack of software. While my gaming heart will always be the PC I will always try anything new. If it takes off, great! if it doesnt, well, caveat emptor. I even bought an Atari Jaguar 10yrs ago. The PSP has a lot of potential, USB can bring portable HDs to the PSP, the possibilities are endless.

You didn't take any marketing classes in college did you? People in the "tween" market segment are the most highly sought after consumers who have a huge disposable income these days. Do some research, read a textbook, you'll see it's current marketing knowledge.

The PSP is going to be a gigantic success and is the one product that will keep Sony's head above the water over the next few quarters until PS3 comes out.

So, if "no one wants a swiss army knife" then why are other mfg's of portable media devices attempting to add more features (ie iPod photo) to stay competitive?

BTW: My buddy and I each bought two with the intent on reselling on ebay for some profit (prolly not gonna happen). He broke down and opened one up....we both had a fit because it is honestly one of the coolest pieces of hardware I've seen in a long time. Ima break down here any time now...I gotta play with this thing!

The only thing remotely close to being like GT4 that is going to hit the PSP is GranTurisimo4 The PSP version of the game has been in the works for a year at least.

Have to agree with that. There were a few companies making these machines that were supposed to be able to browse the web, play games, watch movies, handle productivity applications, use it for creating digital content and a bunch of other crap, but obviously the "PC" failed because noone wants a swiss army knife. What kind of moron could ever think that a multi-purpose device would ever catch on?

I was really considering getting one until I found out that it is only wireless B capable. I was expecting something this hot to be at least wirelessB/G for those with all G networks. I do not have any B devices on my network, but from what I understand, your wireless is only as fast as the slowest device. Oh well, I guess I will continue to wait for PS3.

PS3 and PSP are totally different. Shouldn't even be compared.

As for B and G and slowing down your network, that's nonsense. PSP uses 802.11b WiFI and simply use accesspoint for network play.

yea pretty much. whenever you are in a real position to game, you have better options. its not like music where you can do other things at the same time. unless you are a child with loads of time of course. i'm sure its easier for children to convince parents to buy a nintendo ds though.

while its flashy, for many its just a very expensive device to use while pooing.

I am so tempted to sell my ipod and/or PS2 and buy one of these bad boys. Someone said in a thread that there will be a convertor that will allow one to use CF cards instead of the memory stick, is that true? If so I would be on this in a second! BTW can anyone find any information on the hard drive version? Also final question, is it true USA versions have a poorer quality screen than Japanese versions?

damn my PSP got 3 dead pixels!! Exchanged it at Target without problem today though. Hope this one is better.

Anyway Spiderman looks really nice. Beside the dead pixels the screen is awsome. I think it'll work as a video player in my car, i'll just need to find a convenient way to mount it.

According to the handbook it saya a few bad pix are normal. That just blows. I have about 3 odd pixels that dont really bug me but if more get whacky back to sony it goes.

If you think the PSP has ps1 level graphics, then you are smoking crack and its not the good kind.
