PSP web browsing

Got bored the other day. Picked up my son's psp and connected it to my wireless router. This thing is so slow. Anyway to speed it up? Are there any different browsers for a psp?

PSP's browser is slow for a couple of reasons. It's slow mainly because the NetFront browser they use is just awful. I suppose when the PSP first came out, NetFront was a pretty typical browser but it's just slow and vary dated compared to mobile Safari and Opera. The PS3 uses the same crap browser. Secondly, the PSP is limited to 802.11b, which is quite slow compared to newer mobile devices with use 802.11g.

Try using Google's mobile service to convert web pages to mobile format. It really speeds things up for the PSP's browser.

It would be a nice little device even with 802.11b speeds with a nice browser. Shame Sony hasn't seen fit to release a new browser for the PSP. So how do you use Google's mobile service on a PSP?

1 - Check what version of firmware you have. A long time ago, Sony locked the proccessor lower than it's potential, presumably to save battery life (266mhz from 333mhz).

If you have lower than 3.5 firmware, you can upgrade your firmware to increase it's speed.

To check, go to the homescreen, think you go to the menu all the way to the left (system settings?) and then scroll down to System information. The software version is the firmware.

2 - Just FYI, if your son's PSP is the oldest (fat, 1000), it has half the internal memory (32MB vs 64
MB of RAM) as opposed to the newer ones.

I haven't actually installed this as I don't like browsing on my PSP, but there is a homebrew app that sounds good. http://pspiso.com/forumdisplay.php?f=128

Note that he needs to have hacked your PSP to do this.

BTW, that is a great site to download a lot of custom games, applications, utilityes, and uh... obtain backups for your games as well. :X
