Looking to purchase a portable game playing system and its down to the gp2x or psp. Also looked at the zodiac but its more of a pda it seems than a game playing system.

I have nearly every legal mame rom known and the gp2x is an emulator for lots of systems.

Opinions?

PSP but make sure its firmware 2.0 or below. Those are getting scarce these days so you may have to search, but doing that will give you access to all homebrew / emulators currently out there. Check www.pspupdates.com and www.psp-hacks.com for more info.

I like GP2X, although it is linux based, and as we all know, linux is not ready for prime time. Seems like you have to tinker with it to get a lot of things to work.

had a ds, the screen was waaay too small.

I guess i need to look in fs/ft forums to see if anyone has a psp with version less than 2.0
Do they have mame emulators and everything for the psp? what about writeable media since you can use a xd card with the gp2x

Thanks

I'm not a fanboi :p but psp easily wins.

you can play:

music
movies
psp games
tons of games from a wide selection of non-sony consoles

then there's the web browsing option, ebook potential, etc..

you can play:

music - 4x the size of most DAPs with 1/4 battery life
movies - Tiny screen for movies, UMD prices (or encoding hassle) and you have to hold it for 2 hours.
psp games - Any good ones?
tons of games from a wide selection of non-sony consoles - Best bit, but expensive to play emu's

then there's the web browsing option, ebook potential, etc..

It's OK, but the DS is not meant to do all that. Just fun games, plus wireless multiplayer LAN/WAN games.

Ok well you can get version 2.0 because theres a downgrader for it so you can go back to 1.5 where all the fun stuff is. There's a Mame emulator, but from what I hear it's slow and doesn't have sound. There are nes, snes, genesis, gba emulators out there though, and a ton of homebrew games / apps being developed. As far as storage is concerned the PSP uses PRO DUO memory from both Sandisk and Sony. The PSP can read up to 4gb cards, but those are expensive, so a 2gb would suit you just fine.

i like my psp decent enough. street fighter 3 is pretty okay. but there's a serious lack of great games for it. some good ones, just not great ones. i still pull out my gba from time to time and play it. not as flashy, but many more great games.

Exactly! The DS is the best at what it does - play good games. If I want an all encompassing device as the stuff the PSP can officially do / not officially sanctioned to do, I might as well get a UMPC (Origami concept). Sure its a bit bigger, but you are not limited as you are with a PSP and can do much more.

And the UMDs.... expensive anyone??? :frown:

The DS screen is not bright enough for me. I use my GBA more than the PSP. It's more portable too.
