PSP 2/PSP-4000 rumors

Queasy

Moderator<br>Console Gaming
Pocketgamer is claiming to have spoken with a developer (not named Dave Perry) about the rumored PSP2.

Like Apple's newcomer (ed: he's referring to the iPhone), the PSP 2 will be a compact device with a large touchscreen. However, where Sony's machine has the edge is when the touchscreen is slid open as it reveals familiar buttons, D-pads and ? praise the Lord of Handhelds ? dual analogue controls.

This new format should allow for both existing hardcore console titles as well as simpler touchscreen games along the lines of those currently available in the App Store. And like the App Store, (and in the absence of UMD), the games will all be available for digital download via the PlayStation Store.

They go on to say that the PSP2 will be unveiled at E3.

why do the rumors seem to revolve around the mock up from a while back. Large sliding screen. now its just a touch screen.

added what mockup I was thinking of.

Sounds like a winner. I'll buy one when it goes homebrew capable - emulators on the PSP were positively awesome.

That might finally get me to buy a PSP, the old mockup image that was floating around looked great.

I wonder about tilt sensing or multitouch since Apple has a bunch of patents on the iPhone that they have no reason to share.

Who cares, I'm seriously tired of the iPhone as a gaming platform. I haven't found any game that makes me WANT to play my iPhone unless I'm standing in line, or stuck in a car, etc.

Then again I don't much care for the Wii either. I sunk $500 into it in a couple weeks and then turned around and gave it to my nephews.

That was pretty smart of you...research much?

I had the disposable income and I wanted a new toy, nothing groundbreaking here. Same reason I own an iPhone in the first place.

Having had both, I could gladly live without. Before having either I couldn't get over not having them. Besides, my nephews adore the system and it makes me feel 'somewhat' worthwhile.

Haha true...I did buy a Dodge Neon in 1999.

I wonder how powerfull it will be graphically, it's been four and a half years since the release of PSP so this new one should have much better graphics. It would be nice if it had backwards comaptability for PSP, PS1 and PS2 games too.

I'll cry if I can't use all my PSP/PS1 ISOs I have for my old hacked PSP. 🙁

If they made a handheld that could play PS2 games and sold them via PSN it would be a money farm.

Well any new PSP is definitely going to play completely PS2-quality games, and then some. Completely PS2 compatible though, in a portable...? per the book Sony tends to play by - it won't be cheap. That's for sure.

Don't get me wrong. I would most likely pay for a PSP2 that could play PS2 games downloaded to it. At least... eventually. I don't play my PSP enough to justify paying an arm and a leg for a new PSP.

it'll be interesting if a PSP2 goes the route Nintendo has stood by for so long - cartridges.
I mean, I don't expect Sony to go downloads only. Downloads-capable? Definitely.
But if it is still sold in stores, and it isn't an optical format, what else will it be then? Optical formats are the cheapest for storage. What are they going to do, sell retail game boxes that have a standard flash memory stick? Costly. I'd fully expect, if not UMD or a new optical format (maybe mini-dvd?), I'd expect a new proprietary storage, unless they simply take 2gb memory sticks and throw up some proprietary data protection on it or something.

But then again, Sony has always been anti-cartridge, and that is all that essentially is. Unless you still have two slots on the PSP2, one for game stick, one for media/gamesaves. Because the way I see it, Sony likes the idea of keeping save games and media portable, to be used in multiple systems. Especially in keeping with going between the PS3 and PSP, or computer and PSP.

Well, Sony did develop Securom.

Maybe they'll sell little memory cards that have some crazy securom-like copy protection where you can only install it onto the system memory of your PSP2 that needs to also needs to be activated through the internet with the serial code you get from the package 😀

<---pulling poop from my butt.

disclaimer: I hate sony.

This would be a huge bonus. I don't like the idea of a download only format. Especially since I buy a lot of my games used. To add to that, Memory Stick Pro Duo is still more than twice the price of SD cards. A lot of PSP games are already exceeding 1gb in size. It would get quite costly to buy games, most likely at full retail store prices, and then have to buy all those memory cards on top of that.

I think since nintendo is selling well they are afraid to end this generation. So instead of releasing the DS2 they release DSi. This is where sony can come ahead, if they release psp2 this year shortly after nintendo releases DSi then they will have no competition and will sell well especially if the graphics are much better on the psp2 then they are on DSi. I would rather have a super powerfull PSP2 then a PSP2 that is same as iPhone with a touch screen. Forget the touch screen, I think they should use the money it would cost for touch screen to be put into the graphics chip.

I would have to disagree w/ you, I think most people would agree that the PSP2 always had better graphics the the DS. Sony making the graphics even better isn't going to sell more systems.

Right, the DS / DSi is already way behind the current PSP in specs. It wins from (the DS) being cheaper and having a massive library of games.

The main reason to increase the PSP specs would be to include a 480-line-vertical display and other hardware to run PS2 games with less or even no extra porting work. Build in the real PS2 slim chips if necessary.

Reducing the PS2 porting cost to near-zero would make offering a massive library of better-than-DS games easy, especially if most were sold by downloading.

I thought the whole reason the PSP didn't do so well was because of the cost of development. I read somewhere that they would never make a god of war for the psp again because it had about the same time frame and cost to develop for a console.

I think the PSP has a very high piracy rate too.

If you could play PS2 games on the PSP I might buy one, so I can finish my PS2 backlog. I hope Sony would encourage developers porting games to add quick saves, nothing is more frustrating the a mobile game w/o quick saves.

OMG FOR THE LOVE OF ____. EVERYTHING IS NOT DUE TO PIRACY! that is the biggest load of crap man i swear. How many people do you really think are intelegent enough to hack a psp? Hack pc software? Install hacked pc software? Download pirated movies? SERIOUSLY how many people do you really think know how to do it compared to the millions upon millions that go buy the stuff? Next question, how many pirates do you think just download stuff and never buy the retail products when they hit the shelves? Pirates are being the copout blame for everything in the media world and im so freaking sick of it.
