The PSone is the latest incarnation of the original Playstation. I call it a "re-fit". Does anyone know what the difference is between the PSone and the old PS1 models (the rectangular ones). The only reason that I've frequently heard is the PSone has better cooling capabilities or something.

Also, I have one of the old rectangular PS1s. I heard some people talking about model numbers (like 9xx0 or something). How do I find out my model number? What does this model number signify?

i believe some of the older models were able to play copied cd's without the use of a mod chip or anything..

the psone is just smaller and another excuse to charge more money for something that is old and no good. i i havnet hear anything about it cooling better. if you want a playstation i have 2 laying around that i never use and i will give away. :)

ps2 rocks!

I already have a PSX :p but I was just wondering for curiosity reasons why Sony released and marketed the same damn console but with a sleeker exterior. I'm not much of a console player, just have it so when friends come over, we have something to do besides them watching me kick ass at Q3 while they are getting their asses kicked and me being bored. :)

Why is the PSX still so expensive and yet you can pick up a Dreamcast for 1/2 the price of a PSX (Dreamcast is alot better console btw) but you would think sony would drop the price on it :)

The original PSX had model numbers ranging from 1000-9000 (it's on the bottom of you PSX). If you wanted to get a mod chip you needed to know what model number you have to get the right one. There were also some other small differences between the model numbers too (like one came with a "light show" for the Cd player, some came with the dual analog, some had an AV multi out where the older ones had AV components seperate, some of the later models didn't have the parallel port, etc.).

The only reason I can think of that the PSOne has better cooling is because it moves the AC/DC coversion from inside the system to the brick outside (which I think every system should do). It also gets rid of the serial and parallel port or something.

The big advantage of the PSOne is you can stack the LCD screen on it and take it to the car!

Absolutely. As far as I can tell, that's the only difference. The PSOne is really small compared to the psx.
I would love to get a PS2 (with a mod chip so I could play all my modded psx games) but they are so darn expensive still. I think as soon as the price drops to less than 200 I may go for it. I wanna play Grand Theft Auto 3!! :(
