OK, I have a question. Will there be any problems with watching a DVD (not a rental) on the PS3 tonight? I don't want to foobar my saved-game data, but my wife would like to watch some DVDs tonight.

Edit: I have a 40GB fat that I bought when they first came out (~Q4'07). Also, I never play on PSN, so if the trophies that might be lost are associated with that and not local play, then I'm thinking it's not much of a risk to use it tonight. What do you think?

From what I understand, as long as you make sure that the system doesn't try to log into the PSN, you're fine.

In other words, turn off your internet connection, turn on the PS3 and set your account to not automatically sign into the PSN. Then turn on your internet again. You can browse the internet from the browser, do any offline activities (DVD, games, etc.) and then use the system update to download the firmware update when Sony releases the fix.

I may be wrong but the slim's chips are not exactly the same as the fat's, hence less power usage. The ps2 chip is also in some of the fats. Maybe the one's with the ps2 chip need to use some different clock code to run. Just my 2 cents.
Wasn't CECHL when the transition from 90nm happened? Could be the new die shrink also came with some errata fixes.

If it was a hardware error, and the move to a smaller die corrected it, then the problem would have been known about long before and fixed via software before now.

I'm guessing it's a hardware incompatibility with the current software and date.

Not necessarily. Could be that the hardware team didn't bother to tell the software team - it's not like the guys doing the die shrink are a couple cubes over from the guys writing the dashboard...

Ya know, it's pretty iffy to me. I understand the whole concept of why PS3's are down and how the bug can be addressed and whatnot, but the two most concerning things I have to add are:

A. Why must the PS3 involuntarily, against your consent, log online to the PSN server? Is this doing it while you are playing "offline", but cable/wifi connected? That's just messed imo. Granted it only affects games with Trophies, but still. Something makes me think it's EULA worthy to note if it's not there.

B. Sony taking forever to address the issues and proper public relations keeping the hordes of angry people at bay. Cross your fingers and hope it's fixed in 24 hours - what kinda secret agenda is that, when we are talking a global issue :(.

Why does your computer involuntarily connect to the internet every time you turn it on? Why does your Cell connect to the network when you turn it on. Sony relies on PSN to deliver the latest news and other things to the playstation community. MS does the same thing with xbox.

Also if you missed it, there is a tab in the network tab that says "Sign me in automatically" You can uncheck that if you wish. Its opt in auto sign in.

What else do you want them to do. They already had a press release that said they know theres an issue, they've probably figured out the problem, and that they should have a fix in 24 hours, and that they will post info as soon as its available. And to take safeguards and not turn your PS3 on. Is there anything else they CAN do?

They posted the do not turn on your PS3 thing like 10-15+ hours since the problem started, 1 hour after the "We know you are having problems" issue.

I have the sign in automatically unchecked. One of the PS3's went down without an ethernet cable or wifi in it.

FWIW, it seems to be an internal clock issue as they noted 16 hours after the community did.
If that's it, then judging the firmwares are as the same with bios flashes, they could have gotten up some patch already for the consumers to download.

Granted there are varying versions of PS3's and probably components to boot, but hey isn't that what IT is for?

I'll be damned. Looks like the dud came back to life just now! Thanks for the heads up Sadaiyappan.

Next time I do hope Sony takes time out to explain what they're trying to do.

It's fixed. Didn't have to do anything special, just turned it on and connected to PSN.

PS I tried the disconnect internet/clock thing yesterday and again today, but no dice. Whoever posted that was lying. Part of the problem was that the clock could not be set viz the net.

My favorite joke from NeoGAF:
2008: Sony removes PS2 compatibility from PS3
2009: Sony removes UMD compatibility from PSP
2010: Sony removes PS3 compatibility from PS3
2011: TBA
