Riding a motorcycle is idiotic period.

Riding one without a helmet is idiotic period.

Forcing people to protect themselves through law is infinitely more idiotic, period.

No doubt the protest ride was trying to show that riding without a helmet is no more dangerous than riding with a helmet.

the irony comes from the fact that if he was wearing a helmet .. he woulda lived... he's protesting something that woulda saved his life.

I don't even own a car. I'm an "idiot" for not being able to afford a car and using appropriate alternative motorized personal transportation? Just because it's obviously not as safe as a typical car doesn't make it "idiotic" any more than driving something other than the best safety-rated Volvo.

Uhh, no, it was simply rebelling to fight a nanny law with a poetic outcome.

One would expect someone to die or be more seriously injured without a helmet than with one, so it isn't irony.

OK, ignoring that it was more likely to happen, I guess you wouldn't expect someone to demonstrate the need for helmet safety while objecting to helmet safety laws, so it is ironic in a sense.

Not to mention the other costs:
- The emotional toll on friends and family.
- The loss of a person who may well have been contributing something of some value to society by holding a job.
- The resulting disruptions at the workplace.

Improved lifespans is something that helps increase society's overall productivity, which can lead to a boost in overall quality of life. In short, laws to try to keep people safe is to keep their injuries or deaths from dragging down everyone else.

Saw a study about 5 years ago that said anyone over 40 needs to wear a helmet, the structures in the brain become more brittle and the brain is much more susceptible to trauma since they don't protect your gray matter as well as they did when you were younger.

I see this guy was 55.

PSA, if you bump your head and you're >40, get a CT scan ASAP

Also, only a fool rides a motorcycle without a helmet at any age.
 
This is sad and NOT funny. What does it take to protect people against themselves? this country is full of fools who think they have the answer ...

I never said you were an idiot for not being able to afford a car, just for riding a motorcycle. One does not justify the other. It is only a matter of time before you DO have an accident, and at most normal driving speeds, helmets are worthless. Might keep you noggin from cracking open, but the extra weight will just help snap your neck, not to mention helmets + pavement at 30+ MPH to 0 MPH in 0 seconds = crushed helmet and whatever is inside, and even if it doesn't crack along with your head, your brain will slam the inside of your skull hard enough to cause instant death. How often do you ride under 30 MPH? I'd rather drive an unadulterated 1977 Ford Pinto than any motorcycle.
