PSA: Xbox Live will be down for up to 24 hours on 6/16

Major Nelson - They are getting Live ready for all the new stuff they are releasing in August (I think that's right) like Last.fm, Facebook, Twitter, Games on Demand, Avatar Marketplace, User Ratings, Zune Video Marketplace, etc.

So, Live and the 'My Xbox' section of Xbox.com will be down starting at 12:01 AM PST on Tuesday June 16th.

Making this a sticky so that it doesn't come as a surprise tomorrow.

edit: This page at Xbox.com will tell you the current status of Live.

edit 2: The support page is showing the following message:

Users may experience difficulties when attempting to use Marketplace and/or making purchases. We are aware of the problem and working to resolve the technical issues. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and thank you for your patience.

Are they adding the NetFlix update that allows you to manage your queue from your XBOX 360?

Yeah, I believe that is supposed to be part of the package that is getting released in August or sometime in the fall. The downtime is just MS prepping Live for the release.

I thought the design of the CXE (Current XBOX Experience) was made so they could implement new stuff transparently. I guess if everything is completely offline, it's transparent, right? 😉

Are we going to get reimbursed for a day of downtime like WOW does when they have out of the ordinary outages? 🙂

Or, is Live going to adopt the WOW system of being down every Tuesday for "scheduled maintenance". 🙁

Yeah actually, Microsoft is refunding one day of service, which costs $.10. They issued the refunds by flying around in planes dropping dimes on sidewalks. You can collect your refund by walking on any sidewalk until you find your dime.

Well, the Billing, Marketplace, and Matchmaking portions of Live are back up and running according to the support link in the OP. Live itself is still down however.

This is actually kind of amusing, because two of the parts that take your money are back up first...

And mugs, my post was sarcasm...

Mine was too... 😉

they really need to provide more blog updates or tweets (atleast hourly) so people know as the time gets closer how much longer it will be.

it's still down here on the east coast.

😕

The Major Nelson tweet I posted at about 2:30 PM EST said that Live would be down for another 12 1/2 hours. That means it will come back up around 3AM EST.

If you're really that curious though, check out the Xbox Live Operations Blog

7pm Pacific Update

Our work in the datacenter continues ? we are currently in the validation process. I know everyone is anxious, but I am certain you can also understand why we want to make sure we got it right.

A lot of questions around what we are doing and why ? of course, we don?t get to talk about everything, but here are some of the activities at a high level:

1. Completion of remaining upgrades to Windows and SQL Servers
2. Application upgrades/changes to support upcoming goodness
3. Capacity expansion changes

Given the number of servers we have to touch and some of the forward-looking work we are doing, this was a fairly complex session. Rest-assured we did some pre-work to make sure the downtime was as brief as possible. I know its hard to be off for a day, and believe me when I say we understand this as well as anyone ? after this work we move immediately into executing on some plans for the fall that should make the length of future ?maintenance? sessions much more brief.

I have to go beat up on e and Shreddy in Halo for a bit just to make sure all is well. We have the entire LIVE org hitting things hard right now, testing every scenario, to make sure we got everything right. Will let everyone know just as soon as we are good to go.

Another change, in the Marketplace Xbox Originals has been changed to Games On Demand.

Obviously leading up to the downloadable 360 games.

Ok, I don't understand the point of this. Seriously. The largest hard drive is 120GB (which I have) and it is almost full due to me installing the games to the hard drive. I can't even install all the games I have because I don't have enough space, so how the heck is this downloadable service going to work? Downloading little games like MKII or Marvel vs Capcom is fine, but not full blown 360 games. I'll need at least a 1.5TB for that. Don't get me wrong, I would rather have a downloadable game so I don't have to get up and look for the game I want to play. But this space issue is a real problem.
