We had a lady drop one off Saturday that was done in notepad! It had a few lines, then at the bottom said "Interested?"!!!

She was wanting a job as a web designer too.

I'd gladly take notepad format, at least I could read it.

I wouldn't get offended if someone used a Word template. After all that what they are designed for. :)

I think it all depends on how anal the recruiter is (not that being annoyed at an unreadable font is being anal)... I'm talking about the ones who don't accept things in PDF format or whatever else. As long as it is presentable and formatted legibly, it should qualify.

Are we testing the prospects skills/experience or the recruiter's patience ?

I once used the Blood of Dracula font for a resume for an IT position and got the job. They liked my sense of humour.

If they tell you that before hand and you can't follow that simple direction, then too bad for you.

Shows you know how to optimize your time ;)

I usually just look for online samples. Am right now in fact ;) Kind asick and tired of this job. Look doesn't matter as much as how it's organized.

1) Make sure things are logiically grouped and the most important information comes first.
2) ???
3) profit!

While I won't immediately disqualify an applicant for using a stock template, I will definitely knock points off.

My feeling is that if a person really wants to work for me, they need to spend a little time trying to win me over. Spelling errors, glaring grammatical errors, and poor layout also turn me off.

Word Templates are really dependent on the job. I almsot would expect a secretary to submit me a word template and would almost hope to say they would do so. It would show me they know how to use word and they can manipulate templates properly. However if its a computer programmer i would expect them to go a little bit above and beyond creating their own format. If anyone at any time uses any font other than aarial, times, verdana, or similar definately goes into the circular file folder.

Here is an easy way to get templates that most people do not use:

Google for something like this: allinurl:resume*.(doc|pdf)

That will give you a lot of resumes in PDF or Word format. Find a layout you like and use it.

I just googled the font to see what it is. It really doesn't look too bad. But I agree with your point. I can't stand it when people use abnormal fonts for professional work.

what do you all think about Tahoma? It looks similar to Verdana but is spaced closer together. Verdana is easier to read, but I can't seem to fit everything on one page.

If you are a designer of any sort and have a boring looking resume, expect to be passed up.
If you are a designer of any sort and use crappy clip art, expect to be passed up.
If you are a designer of any sort and don't have a portfolio, expect to be passed up.
If you are NOT a designer of any sort, just make it readable and cleanly formatted. you won't be passed up.

The end.

define "designer". I design web applications, but most of my work is server side and in backend GUI development. I can't draw a stick figure to save my life though...
