I think the users that complain a lot are creating a boy who cried wolf situation, which jades the IT folk into thinking everybody is full of shit when there's some real problems out there. A good IT person knows the users well enough to know when certain people complain, it actually means something because they usually know how to handle simple computer issues on their own. A bad IT person says "everyone's computer is slow", and they also don't seem to give a F(?).

I hate turning on my computer in the morning before leaving to work and having a browser open in about 20 seconds while it takes about 3 minutes once I get to work and am able to open and navigate outlook.

My mother has a slow computer with XP she uses for web browsing and word processing and it can take upwards of 15-20 seconds to get anything to work sometimes. (computer programs, not talking internet/lantecy ms) Intensive scan with avast and spybot turns up nothing, uses chrome with adblock, latest flash and security updates (outside of ended XP support) even ccleaner cleaning the system out and cleaning the registry plus defragging the harddrive doesn't seem to help. Reinstalling windows would probably do the trick, but still. Makes you wonder just what it is that bogs down a well maintained machine, even if it is old.

My old computer took 30 mins to boot up and get to the windows login screen. I made the IT person sit there with me and time it.

He gave me another computer that was just as old but booted up in 5 mins

Defrag. Shit registry (ccleaner will fix most of this) and running new code on older processors. New code requires more cpu/memory over time. Updating all your programs and installing more than you started with/need is what slows things down.

It's not like the hardware suddenly performs slower.

My last work laptop was benchmarking at 100+ms access times with sub-10MB read/write speeds. I hope it wasn't that bad when it was new. 😛

We have a base image for the 3 types of PC's at work. On an external drive that is bootable to acronis. User craps up a computer and I can have them back to day one in 20 minutes. We use roaming profiles so boom, done.

It's really tough too when you're on a tight budget. I have one larger customer who really loves these little NUC computers, which use 500 mb/s SSD drives, and recently wired up CAT6 Gigabit to everything, so the user experience is pretty awesome because your computer boots up in like 30 seconds & everything is zippy. Working with a customer that has both a budget & a management charter to improve efficiency is da bomb :thumbsup:

But most of the places I work with actually still use Windows XP (despite it being 2015), typically on like a Dell tower with a 5400rpm hard drive, and due to the budget, the best they can sometimes do is max out at 4 gigs of RAM (32-bit XP) & replace the boot drive with a solid-state drive, so at least their user experience is improved over what they had before. I still have customers that use 95 because it works, which sounds crazy, but that's the real-world. Personally I love managing a variety of devices & especially have fun doing creative upgrades for sites with aging equipment (like to the NUC mini-computer platform), so it's all good. Plus I'm not on-site 24/7 at these smaller places so I don't have to deal with the constant complaints because the owners won't buy good stuff :biggrin:

It's really amazing how many companies just don't have CLUE though. I have one customer who has the budget, but not the management ability, to upgrade the computer (i.e. they can pay for it but see computers as cars - you have a computer, why do you need a new one?), which really limits their productivity throughout the day because everyone is working dog-slow. One funny thing at that site is that they use a 48-port 10/100 unmanaged Netgear switch from Staples for an entire office full of people & wonder why everything is slow & why it keeps crapping out every few months. They finally upgraded to a Gigabit model, which helped, but it was basically office full of users > unmanaged Gigabit switch > some Comcast router or something. With ancient XP 5400rpm computers 😀

My computer's not slow, and it's a 4-year-old laptop. Either your work sucks at keeping their hardware upgraded, or you suck at doing your job and keeping things running smoothly.

Sure, users shouldn't keep trying to open the same program over and over.
But the fact that it is opening so slowly that they feel the need to try again is a symptom, not a cause.

Meh, that's nothing. I want to know who these idiots are who walk into the copier room... "Hmmm, where's my 20 page printout?" Go back to their room, click print again. Lather, rinse, repeat, repeat, repeat, repeat.

I go to make a 1 page photocopy. "Hmmm. The copier has a paper jam." <fixes jam> "That ought to do it." Click. "Hey, this isn't my copy. This isn't my copy either. What? Page 3 of 15? Okay.... <counting> 13.....14......15.... WTF? This isn't my page. Page 1 of 15?!!" 10 minutes later, there's a ream of paper sitting on the output tray. And, there's no way I can delete someone else's print job. Wouldn't want people deleting stuff that other people need.

We make it take as long as possible. We had one user who wouldn't quit clicking on virus links that made it through the filter. At least once and usually 2-3 times a week she would wreck her computer by clicking on anything and everything. Gave her a good 4 days without a computer and she finally learned her lesson.

If you are one of the good users we can get you back up in a matter of minutes. But we don't have many of those...

Blasphemy! We have RemoteFX! HDX! PcoIP! Our sites have a Fiber MPLS with 802.11ac access points in the buildings! You have a Full HD screen with a brand-new thin client! We gave you a wireless keyboard, for Pete's sake! What is this madness you speak of, "slow" performance? I'm playing 1080p Youtube in my session in the server room as we speak! The screen lag you're seeing is probably because your eyes are too slow to keep up! :awe:

I work in the same room as the "IT" department (I use that term VERY loosely).

They are surly and angry people. For the stupidest things too. They need to get off their high horse once in a while. I love IT/Helpdesk that doesn't want to help people... it's your JOB fucktard. If you don't like helping people with problems, I suggest finding a new line of work.

(Don't get me wrong, end users are morons too. But that doesn't give the IT/Helpdesk people the right to be assholes. Again, their job is to help, so do it.)

The biggest issue in a slow computer IMO for corporate users is a shitty hard drive. I have been ordering laptops\desktops with SSDs for years. Never hear a complaint about slowness. We have even begun upgrading older laptops with SSDs and they work better than ever. Too many times I see some idiot ordering corporate desktops with 1TB 5400RPM drives. Really?
