Seriously.. it may be all those things you say, but it's still applicable to %50 of the fucking news we see on a daily basis. As a country.. we are over-sensitive, over-protective, and over-emotional (not to mention over-weight, but I digress).

In my experience it is mostly used by people who don't put much thought into what they're reading. That is, they read the shocking headline and the biased story but don't consider anything beyond that.
