PSA: The roads are for cyclists too!!!

So, I'm on my ride tonight after work and I decided to do a road ride instead of the usual bike path ride and some idiot honks at me and his fvcktard friend rolls his window down and flips me off. For what I have no idea because I'm riding on the right side of the road as far over as possible and these geniuses are in the left lane on a 2 lane road.

Hey idiots! Learn the rules of the road before you hurt yourselves. :|

There was no shoulder...just an 8" curb some grass and then a sidewalk. The stupid city moved the road over to the curb for about a 1/4 miles while they are doing construction.

I grew up riding in upstate New York on roads with little or no shoulders.

Somehow I never seem to have a problem giving bicyclists enough room when I'm driving my car. It's really as simple as showing a little fvcking courtesy. So please, STFU and pay attention when you drive and don't do stupid sh!t like these nimrods did tonight.

But as a cyclist, make sure you still obey the rules of the road. Far too many cyclist here in the Toronto area fail to realize, if you're on the road, you are need to follow the same rules as if you're a car. But instead, they run lights and stop signs and weave through traffic to make a left.

I always follow the rules of the road and I never run red lights or stop signs. If I'm turning left I will move into the far right of the left turn lanes (which is perfectly legal to do).

On top of the already mentioned obvious (that most cyclists have cars too), cyclists are REQUIRED to ride on the road. By law. That's where they have to be, you think they'd choose to ride by 3000 lb objects moving 5x their speed?

Not to mention cyclicsts cause virtually no road wear.

Unfortunately most roads weren't really designed to be bike friendly, bike lanes are non existent here in PA where I am now (though they were all over the place in the Portland area where I'm originally from).

to be honest, some cyclists are annoying. especially at night.

i think theres a special rule here in this state where you must be a certain feet away from the cyclist. its especially annoying and extremely dangerous at night when the cyclist has no light on the bicycle and you only notice him a few feet in front of you. im talking about dark streets and roads

i would like cyclists to try to stay near the sidewalks as possible, for their own safety and the safety of people in vehicles. also, use bright lights at night so we would know you are there

But motorist really have no clue how to deal with a bike.

Just treat it like another vehicle. I have to abide by the same rules as the car.

Heck, when I pass a cyclist I do a full pass...meaning choose appropriate place to pass, pull all the way over into the other lane and pass.

If I were you, just ride in the middle of the road so others will "get it"

Bicyclists in my area are very annoying. Its the roads thats the problem though. They are not bike friendly at all. They can get over as far as they can and you still have to go over in the other lane just to pass them. Which on a busy 2 lane road (we have a ton of these) its almost impossible.

I'm in CA. It's still light out right now. There was plenty of light when I was on my ride earlier. If I ride at night I have a blinking red LED light in back and a bright white light in front. I haven't ridden at night in years though. I might start again though this winter commuting to work on my bike so I'll have to break out the lights again.

It is illegal for cyclists to ride on the sidewalk here. It is also the law that cyclists who ride after dark have front and rear lights on their bikes.

I don't think bicyclists should be banned from roadways, but some bicyclists are just ridiculous. There is this one narrow ass road near my house that has absolutely no shoulder. It only has one lane on each side and its has big ditches on each side. For some reason bicyclists seem compelled to ride down that road during rush hour, even in groups of 2-3 where they take up nearly half a lane. I have no problem sharing the road when its reasonable, but its not like the cyclist needs his bike to get to/from his job like hundreds of other people on the same road need cars to go to/from work. The driver should always be able to avoid the biker safely, if they cannot. the guy on the bike shouldn't be on the road to begin with.

I would say the city should fix the damned roads so that cars and bikes can safely share the road. Until then I guess you'll just have to drive a little more cautiously/slowly for those few miles. Many people commute on their bikes. I think many more people should.
