You're just jealous..

4200 Athalon X2
2x1024 MB REM
7800GTX PCIx video
2 x 74GB SCUZI Segates

In that case refer to the specification for the correct terminology.

Which is.....

16 LANES comprising one LINK which may be described as a "x16" link.

However, also distinguish between physical slots, and the number of active lanes on that slot at any given time.

Eg put two graphics cards into the two physical x16 slots on a 975X motherboard and each GPU will negotiate to only use the x8 (electrical) LINKs available when both slots are in use. Obviously some SLI x16 motherboards can have two x16 slots each delivering a x16 Link. Or the Gigabyte Quad Royal can have four physical x16 delivering x8 on each.

Meh, I've seen it called PCI-X in stores too.

You should blame the idiots that named it PCI-E, instead of something else.

Actually THEY DID call it something else.

It was "3GIO" ie 3rd generation I/O.

or "Next generation I/O".

Unfortunately, the first might be confused with 3G mobile phones, and there were other competing standards for next generation like "Future I/O".

So probably it was some marketing person thought "It's quite like old PCI so we retain brand loyalty with calling it PCI EXPRESS".

Pity about the abbreviations though LOL. They should have made it explicit what NOT to abbreviate it too (since PCI-X was largely exclusively found in servers so not everyone was aware of it).

The computer dealer I ridiculed was not happy to have to change his pricelist and website for all the product descriptions of motherboards and graphics cards, but now it is correct.

Join the campaign. If you catch someone using PCI-X to NOT mean PCI-X, educate them forcefully!

Why?

You really need a new hobby if it's going to get you all worked up when people use the wrong computer terms. It happens millions of times a day and that won't change. Next week it'll be some other word, and another, and so on until the end of time. Consider a girlfriend-e upgrade to take your mind off this.

PS2FTW!1!!

Yeah, I'm so "wtfpwnt" by posting a thread trying to help people understand and use the correct term for an expansion slot as to not confuse others.

Don't forget that this thread took me at least a day to write, counting the rough draft and proofreading. </sarcasm>

And if one person starts using the right abbreviation, my thread has done its work.

Oh, and getting a girlfriend would only serve to piss off my fiancée.

"Counter-pwnt," bitch.

Good topic. Not everyone is a techno-cyber nerd who knows everything. So this post actually helped me out. I've recently started using PCIe (thanks for correct spelling) and in forums I didn't know what to type when looking for advice on what videocard/mb to upgrade to.

No, it's true. The pics are floating around here somewhere.

it's debatable. some say it was photochopped, some say it was genuine.

If you zoomed it still looked geniune, but i couldve been a VERY good photoshop.

I'm actually sort of curious as to why you posted this now rather than, say, 12 months ago.

People, for the most part, seem to be actually using the correct abbreviation now. But hey, if it means less people calling it "PCI-X", I'm all for it.

Because, say, 12 months ago - it was in my sig, and several others. But people are still calling it PCI-X, or worse, PCI - implying that you can just ram it into an older slot and vice versa.

(While I'm at it, it's "Voila" - not "Viola", "Walla", or any of the other bastardizations. :p)

this reminds me of the threasd where a user actually cut up a pci-e card to ram it into a pci slot.

Was that the guy who cut his 7800GTX to fit into an AGP slot?

i think it was a 6xxx series.

That'd be pretty 1337 if it worked. LOL

Yes. It was bitmap with rle encoding or something like that. Paint for Windows 3.1 allowed you save in that format.

NO, this is NOT a trivial issue.

There was PCI. Then there was an improved faster/longer/widertransfers version called PCI-X developed by the same group of people.

Now there is the next generation PCI Express, by the same group.

I didn't know there were two different technologies. Wow. I've been out of this whole computing thing for too long.

How long have you been engaged? I might have you confused with someone else, but it seems like a while now. I might be wrong. It might be someone else.

PCI-X is a completely different standard.
