That's why I'm glad for the new law in Texas (starts September 1st). If you're in a school zone, and you're caught texting or using your cell phone any way but hands free, you're getting a ticket.

While I think the legislature wimped out, and should have made it anywhere in the state, I'm glad that at least they've taken a step in the right direction, and are doing something to protect the kids. They're also pretty strict on enforcing the 20mph speed limit in school zones, so this is definitely a good thing!

Texting while driving is like doing anything else while driving.. eating, drinking, changing the music dial, reading your GPS unit, makeup, whatever. The problem is that most people can't handle any of these activities while driving safely. You CANNOT TAKE YOUR EYES OFF OF THE ROAD! If you don't take your eyes off of the road, you're likely to be fine. I used to be able to text without looking on my old phone, so I would sometimes text while driving. That being said, I'd only do it on open stretches when I wasn't really around other people. With my Blackberry, I can't text while driving anymore because I have to look at the keys (and use two hands..) I think people just generally need to stop being dumbasses with devices that take their attention.

I'll agree with some of those tasks, but drinking (non-alcoholic)?? Anyone who thinks that drinking a beverage, such as a soft drink from a fast food place through a straw, is a distraction to driving is probably someone who has trouble chewing gum and walking down the sidewalk at the same time. It takes almost zero concentration, and you don't have to look away from the road.
