And it's good for local business, which matters to me.

No it is not, at least not in the long run. Once Amazon, Google and who knows what others start offering same day delivery, it is going to kill them.

Amazon knows how hard it is to know what sales tax to charge for every municipality, county, and state in the country (and then to actually deal with sending them the money). They know this will make it harder for smaller competitors to do business. Why would they be against it?

I see a market for a database company tracking sales tax rates and linking them to zip codes.

2nd day prime has for me, mostly. I'm not spending an hour to drive to Target, shop, return drive unless I have to have it today or unless I want to see it 1st hand. And for $4, it's next day.

Interestingly, I shop books at B&M before I do A.

That's it. I'm moving to Cuba.

Hasta la Vista, baby...enjoy your 1958 Chebby. :p

Exactly - if Amazon has to pay, they think everybody should pay, because otherwise it's an uneven market.

Which is what the local B&M merchants have been saying for years.

There's a big thread in P&N about this too.

I don't like paying taxes any more than anyone else...but if we want the government services, (roads, bridges, police, fire, etc.) then we have to pay for it somehow.

If having to pay your state's sales tax is going to make or break the deal for you...you're obviously not one of the 1%...and shouldn't be spending your money on such trivialities anyway...:whiste:

As mentioned in the P&N thread, I'd lmao if somehow the states were able to use something like CISPA to get the records of a lot of online companies, then go after people who didn't pay the use taxes as well as tack on a bunch of penalties.

Seems like this would put the online stores at a disadvantage since they charge shipping which I always considered my "tax" for shopping online.

Except Amazon. They're new wal mart for running mom and pops into the dirt and we, Americans, feast at the trough.

I have paid sales tax on Amazon for years. Even with tax and shipping their prices are cheaper. Add in Prime, and the shipping point is moot.

You'd laugh? Does that mean you've been paying them all this time?

That would never happen. Just collecting these taxes will be unpopular enough. Going after people for back taxes would be politically fatal.

Ah, just the kick bitcoin needs. While you guys are paying 4% in Paypal fees and 10% more in tax, I'll be buying things at a discount for bitcoin and paying neither.

A. collects them. The state dept revenue goes after them. Politicians are "immune."

Once..just ONCE..I'd like a bill/law/wtfever put into effect that actually benefits the general populous, and not business and government and interest groups.

I wonder if they can even produce 1 from the last 10 years.

I'm right behind you on that. Imagine a government decision that actually benefits citizens.

Is that a unicorn overthere, and check out that flying pig! Too bad this fantasy world of ours is not real.

I wonder though, will this affect Canada in any way? We already have to pay a shit load of custom fees when we order from the states, will we need to pay tax too now?
