PSA: SLOW DOWN!!! Fricking speeders

So, my sister-in-law's best friend was killed over the weekend. Someone decided it was cool to go 110km/h through town and ran over her on her bicycle. She was 22. And get this, the guy had previously had his car impounded a bunch of times by the cops for driving without a licence, DUI, etc etc. He's not even a Canadian, he apparently got through the Canadian border some how. :|

SLOW DOWN!

Ok, a bit more info has come out now:

Seems it was at an intersection. One car was stopped, waiting for the girl to get across the intersection on her bike. The car came and passed the car at the intersection, hit the girl, flew into the ditch (big drainage ditch on the edge of town) and ramped into the field on the other side. My co-worker's son owns the tow truck that went to get the car for the cops and said that the car didn't even drive into the ditch, it flew in and impacted the ditch on the far side before jumping up, giving an idea of the speed he was going.

Anyway, after the car stopped the driver and two passengers got out of the car and ran. I guess they forgot that the car was registered to one of them.

~65 mph through a town?

Ouch. My condolences

I feel you. some people just dont get it.

I used to be one of those ppl when I was younger. I remember hitting 160km/h quite regularily. I guess it's one of those things you grow out of. I was lucky, but this girl wasn't. And thinking about it, if someone would have darted in front of me, there would have been nothing I could do.

What was the speed limit? Was she obeying bicycle laws?

In Canada bicycles always have the right of way, so even if she wasn't it was his fault. The speed limit in towns here is 50km/h.

Ah.

I wanted a little more information before this turned into a witchhunt. 😉

65 in a 35? = automatic death penalty for teh driver.

I counter-propose the death penalty for people pass down assinine judgements like that.

The speed was irrelevant. The fact that he chose to speed in an area where there was a real danger of him hitting a cyclist is the grounds for a punishment. There are plenty of 4 lane, straight-away country roads with visibility for miles and no traffic lights in this country with 35 mph speed limits. You propose the death penalty for everyone doing 65 on lonley country road at 2am?

110 mph in town? That's not speeding, that's not even reckless driving anymore. Sorry to hear about your sisters friend.

Sorry to hear that. There is no excuse for going that fast in town. Getting across the border is pretty easy. Last time I went across over at Port Huron they didn't even ask to see my license. Just a few simple questions and "Have a good day"

I girl going 60 in a 30 residential went into my grandparents yard and totalled both of their cars.

They went from having 2 perfectly fine cars paid off to owing money on ONE replacement.

kph != mph

I know the metric system is hard, but you should learn to embrace it.
