im volunteering @ the E.R. this summer for my senior project. (a different one)

Have fun :) That's how I got started in the medical field. I volunteered at a hospital after one of my close friends was killed. I loved it so much, I decided to make it a career. I've been hardcore into medicine ever since.
I love volunteers. Sometimes, when I'm really good, the on-call lets me give them his orders :D

i just volunteered because it gets me out of school on may 10th, and i work 5 hours, 9-2 pm (yea, no good stuff then). and i only have to do a small report on it. plus i get out of it 2 days due to A.P testing, and once due to a field trip to C.P.

it should be fun. and needles dont hurt!!! (unless they are trying to get a sample of whats goin on in your big toe, cuz its all messed up and swollen, then a ft. long needle being moved around KILLLLLLS

If it's for a school report, I think you should have to do a 30 hour stint with a PGY1 intern. That would be fun ;) Maybe you'll witness a lumbar puncture or a chest tube insertion. The chest tube insertion sounds really disgusting, I love it.

Not yet. I'm a newbie on the path. I've got 1 year left of premed and 4 years of med school. I'm one step above an orderly, and a bitch to everyone else. Which is why I get irritated sometimes. I've explained this more in depth in other threads.

EDIT: Grammar

ah i see you are a true noobie then. you have a long ways to go, if you're irritated by patients now may i suggest not going into medicine. for every 2 good patients there's always one that will annoy the hell out of you.

Actually it sounds like he's irritated because he's a hospital bitch and patients think that makes him their bitch too.

It seems to me that poor people who have the government pay for their health care use the ER as their regular doctor's office. I've sat in an ER waiting room in such intense pain that I was vomiting while I waited for people who had no apparant injuries being checked in. So glad I don't live in Indiana anymore.

You apply broken bones to stop the bleeding?

I haven't done chest tubes (not in my scope) but I have done a few needle decompressions in the field. Advancing a 2 1/2" 14g needle into somebodies chest just seems sooooo wrong, especially when you are in the back of an ambulance driving down the road.

The only time I've been to the ER was when I ruptured my spleen and was bleeding internally (so it turned out). It was a weird constant abdomen pain and I had blacked out twice (once while driving - that was fun).

Anyway, if PCPs' offices were open 24/7 then you guys would get a lot of relief from the "smaller cases".

Don't you absolutely hate it when people go to the ER for a cold or flu? Not only is that absolutely fcuking useless, it gets everyone sick.

As someone who has spent about 2 months in hospital caring for others over the past year, I think all doctors, nurses, psa's should take a deep breath and chill when they get a bad patient. Its not my fault the person in the bed next to me is a total idiot and feels a need to press the button every 5 minutes. Just because your pissed at them doesn't mean I deserve worse care. Its a difficult job, but its also tough for patients... Completely understandable to have a bad day, but it seems like its pretty same every single day there in the hospital.

They are called gomers. Get Out Of My Emergency Room.

At SF General they had a place to put all the drunks we brought in until they sobered up, it was called the "gurney garage" lmao.

NBC's ER should do a segment on people like this... and make people realize just how ridiculous it could get.

Unfortunately no matter how disgruntled we are, or how much we hate you, we end up treating you the best that we can for one of two reasons:

a.) We joined the medical profession because we love to help people, no matter how pissed off they make us.

b.) We'll lose our good paying job if we treat you like we want to.

"c" seems an awful lot like what I said in "a." You can sue a doctor, but that's why they have malpractice insurance (plus, bad bedside manner is hardly a viable suit), and Canada's healthcare system is god-awful. Sure you get free healthcare, but by the time they get around to seeing you, you're probably going to be healed or dead. I really don't feel like arguing today, I'm still trying to get over a bad day yesterday.

I'm not arguing. I agree that many people go to the ER for really dumb reasons.

Just pointing out that you're disgruntled, and I wouldn't trust your service when you're like that.
That is the end. Don't look further into it. Just take your stolen valium and go to bed.

How does Canada manage to provide free health care for everyone ? Don't tell me it's just the GST.

I guess it's not really free, just paid through taxes. Government controlled healthcare is bad. Very bad.
