Holy Crap...F-103 Thunderwarrior - a Mach 3+ fighter in 1957! Cancelled due to funds being diverted to SAC bombers.

Well, yeah. Canada had one. We actually built the fvcking thing, too. Called the Avro Arrow. Went Mach 2 Easily on crap engines. The Onidia engines built for the Arrow would have given it mach3 easily.

It was one hell of an achievement. The Plane itself, the engines, weapon system and Radar was all custom made in Canada for the fighter.

But we scrapped it thanks to US pressure, bought crappy BOMARC missiles and Avro died because of it.

I think we can also blame not only US pressure, but a weak Canadian gov't who caved into US pressure

No it wouldn't have. The plane would have melted if it tried. They make the SR-71 out of titanium for a reason.

It was Canadas own decision had nothing to due with "US pressure" Canadians would never put up the cash to defend themselves anyways. They know the US would help them out.

On the other hand, the strategy of using SAC bombers in Operation Chromedome worked beautifully.

except the USA offered a crapload of random junk for it... of course, the technology ended up being stolen by soviet spies anyways

The Avro Arrow was a beautiful aircraft, well ahead of it's time. Damn politics killed it 🙁
Seems like the Russkie's 'borrowed' a lot of it's designs and construction techniques to build the MiG-25 'Foxbat'. Amazing story none-the-less.

The Avro was made of titanium. According to last nights documentary, the Canadians pioneered a lot of the tooling and alloys - which was considered the best in the world. I wouldn't be suprised that they supplied what was used in the SR-71.

No, the Avro was not made of titanium. The Avro's use of titanium was limited to fasteners, and the area around the engines. It did not have a titanium skin like the SR-71.

The SR-71's skin could take the heat of going mach 3, the Avro's could not.

Read about it here: link

Here's the part that mentions this:

"Frequent mention is made of an Arrow that could have been capable of Mach 3 ? this was not the production version, but one of the design studies, and would have been almost a completely different aircraft from the Arrow Mk.1 and Mk.2, featuring revised engine inlets, and extensive use of stainless steel or titanium to withstand airframe heating."

So the Arrow was not capable of Mach 3.

That Canadian Arrow fighter was sweet, shame they had to scrap it, Boeing (or some other defense contractor) should have at least bought the company.

I recall seeing a show on the Avro Arrow years ago. If I recall correctly the Arrow program was full of Russian spies. The Canadian and US governments determined that it was impossible to root out the spies without stopping the program. So that is what was done. At the time the Avro company was almost completely funded by the US. Many of the technology in the Arrow did turn up in Russian fighters.......
