PSA: Regular flavor oatmeal is so bland

That crap in the little packages is not oatmeal anyway...some kind of mutant mush maybe, but NOT oatmeal...Yeah, the real thing is kind of bland tasting too, but some sugar, brown sugar and cinnamon (if you like those) help spice it up a bit...I like some of the Irish or Scottish oatmeals...steel cut, not so mild mannered as American oatmeal...with real texture...takes some getting used to, but good for you, and stays with you till lunch better than those packaged imitators...

Plain instant oats lack flavor, because they are instant. Steel-cut oats are far better, but you have to make sure to cook them up with salt. They are then further improved by cooking them with half water/half milk. Then add a bit of molasses, maple syrup, or sugar and cinammon. Delicious. I eat steel-cut oatmeal for breakfast every morning.

There are easy ways to fix this.

1) Stop eating the sh!tty microwaveable instant oatmeal out of the bags.

2) Buy real rolled oats. or steel cut oats.
3) Cook on the stove-top, then add a bit of butter and sweeten to your preference (use sugar, brown sugar, honey, splenda...whatever).

4) Enjoy.

Instant oatmeal sold in the individual serving boxes is not only barely oatmeal and scarcely nutritional, it is a total rip-off. Each package contains about 1/4-cup of oatmeal, 10 packages sell for about $2/box. So you're spending $2 bucks for 2.5 cups of low quality, highly processed, flavored instant oatmeal that would cost you less than $0.50 if you bought it in bulk.
If you buy it by the 10-pack box because you can't remember how to make it, just remember that the recipe is 1 part dry cups to 2 parts wet cups, i.e. 1/4-cup oatmeal to 1/2-cup water, 1 minute on high in the microwave. Dash of salt optional. Flavor with butter, brown sugar, real maple syrup, or fruit to taste.

Same here.

Cream of wheat is worse!
You mean an even worse rip-off? I couldn't agree more. A box of Cream of Wheat is $3 bucks. Bulk farina is like $0.60/lb. There is no difference between the 2 except one comes in a box with a brand name.

think of regular oatmeal as "any flavor you want". you just have to add the flavor yourself. it's like buying a blank hard drive instead of buying a computer with windows preinstalled.

You nerd...

real REAL whole oats oatmeal that has to cook over the stove top with milk and a bit of vanilla served with rum soaked rasins and brown sugar is amazing.

oatmeal gives hair on your chest.

If anything, oatmeal makes your chest hair fall out. Not that that's a bad thing for some people, but I expect most of ATOT needs more chest hair- so I wouldn't recomend oatmeal.
