It's definitely a form of entertainment. That $2 or $10 allows me to daydream of what I would do if I won 300 million dollars. People spend money on lots of things. I figure, someone/people has to eventually win, why not me?

not really a lotto player, me, but i always had an opinion on the US lotteries - they pay out way too much. for a normal human, there is no difference between winning 10 million and 100 million; 317 is ridiculous, they should turn it into 10x 30million prizes.

We don't really take home the whole $317M USD. If the winner(s) takes the lump sum option ($176M), then pays all the taxes (Federal, State, Local, etc. at maximum rate), he/she would get about $98 million USD or so (give and take). Not small sum but not the advertised amount either.

If ten people happen to pick the winning numbers or get them from the computer it will be ten smaller prizes.
