PSA: powder detergent suck arse compared to liquid detergent

z0mb13

Lifer
Thought I would save a bit by using the powder detergent, but it sucks arse compared to tide liquid detergent

Strange, consumer reports has said that powdered ones almost universally perform better. But, my parents say what you are saying - that liquids work better. I use powdered just because it is cheaper and CR said that they are almost univerally more effective. Anyone else have input?

Agreed. The powder always leaves clumps somewhere on my clothes. The liquid might cost a little more but it sure saves alotta trouble.

I always use the powder the right way also: that is dissolving the powder first in water. But still it cant take out stains. For example, my white towel has a red stain on it (coz I mistakenly mixed a red garment inside). I washed this towel a couple of times using the powder, and still the stain is never out.
I bought a tide liquid detergent, and after the first wash the stain came out!!

I think the problem maybe lies because the powder just wasnt dissolved completely, or maybe I got the crappy powder detergent (kirkland from costco)

I agree. The savings are negligible, particularly given the hassle.

Poweder or tablet automatic detergents are always better than their liquid equivalent, for the simple fact that the active ingredients can be made more active in dry form. Liquids and now liquid capsules are more of a marketing gimmick for the terminally lazy.

So saying, we sell a hell of a lot of the liquids for just this reason, but I always get the tablets since I know that they perform a lot better - and never give me any of the problems people are describing. What sort of machines do you people use?

I always let the powder and machine run for a minute to make sure all the stuff gets dissolved.

this is how I always use the powder also

me too. i like powder because it comes in those tablets i don't have to measure.

used powder all my life, never had holes in clothes, clumps of soap, or problems getting stains out. Much cheaper too. No reason to buy liquid definetly a gimmick and not worth the money.

Buy quality detergent, and accurately measure.
Spread evenly and break up clumps BEFORE putting it in the washer.
<Geez Laundry 101 by an old guy.....

Tide w/Bleach Alternative powder works better than any liquid out there. Hands down.

Of course, I don't understand how anyone ends up with dumps of dry detergent in the wash once it's done unless one is a true putz when it comes to doing clothes.

There are several ways to ensure the detergent dissolves...........run water, add detergent, add clothes to water when the agitator begins to work.........OR..........(the lazier way) add clothes, start water, add detergent after the agitator begins to work. One key is to not overload the machine....that'll absolutely make sure you have dry detergent left after the wash cycle. If you are shoving and packingthe clothes in, it's too full. The clothes have to be able to tumble easily during the cycle.

Weird.

The powder is more economical, so that's what we use. Never had any issues..

I've heard they use sand as filler in powder detergents.
No way...

That would wreak havoc on your washer and in your pipes. Sand is pretty heavy, it would settle at any low point. It would also build up in your washer.

People, if you are putting your clothes in, dumping soap ontop of them and then starting the washer, not only are you doing it backwards, you are doing it wrong.

RTFM, k? 😉

eli is right

water, soap, clothes. shouldnt have any lumps....when ypou put the soap on top of the clothes...it doesnt have much of a way to get off them, obviously

i work at a drycleaning plant and we do the laundry with a powdered detergent. never a clumpy problem 🙂
