PSA: Play PS3 at Target now

So I went to go get Gears of War at Target and to my surprise they had a PS3 booth setup. I was able to play for a little while and get a feel for the system.

So the output was 720P. Nothing like the 1080P I was hoping for. The controller was ok. The analog sticks are way better than the PS2, but they didn't feel like a comfortable position for my thumbs. Of course that's going to be different for everyone. I played the MotoStorm game. It was pretty fun but the slow motion scenes of my car crashing got old real quick. The load times for the game was sad. I actually thought the system crashed while I was waiting for it to load. The graphics where good but nothing better than a 360. The PSP style menu in the system is ok. Nothing spectacular since we've all seen it already. So I can sum it up like this:

Graphics: Worse than I thought
Controller: A littler better than expected
Load Times: Worse than I thought
System Menu: Average
Gameplay: It was a launch title so I would say it was what I expected

No comments/opinions on the system?

[Borat]

What a NOT huge surprise.

Now I feel even better about the people shelling out big bucks for PS3s on eBay. I hope one of their friends has an XBOX 360 and Gears Of War...just so they can see what a next-generation title looks like.

The only thing I got out of that post was that they have GOW at Target. :D J/K

But being a 360 owner yourself (I presume), is this in comparison to a 360?:

Graphics: Worse than I thought
Controller: A littler better than expected
Load Times: Worse than I thought
System Menu: Average
Gameplay: It was a launch title so I would say it was what I expected

That's just what I thought of the PS3 before ever playing one, not compared to the 360. Compared to the 360 it would be:

Graphics: A little worse (developers have had a full year with the 360, so I would say they'll even up real quick)
Controller: Worse (I think the sixaxis analog sticks are just to low. It makes everything feel off balance. Your right hand is always higher than your left, it's just goofy to me. Swap the D-Pad and the left analog stick and we'd be in business.)
Load Times: Yikes
System Menu: Same
Gameplay: N/A

I played the Wii last night and was terribly disappointed. In fact, the most telling thing about the system was that the store was full of gamers waiting for Gears yet no one came to watch me play and when i was done no one tried it. The controller was not fun to use. I think for Zelda and the nunchuck setup it might be better, but just the wiimote, especially for a driving game (i played excite truck) it was really awful and no fun.

P.S.-where was your target?

I'm in the Chicago suburbs.

Quite honestly, I've yet to understand the fascination with the Wii. I took one look at that controller when it was first revealed and I haven't looked at it since. Yikes. It's one thing to "think outside the box", it's another thing to be a nut job.

I know there's the appeal of classic games, which I would love, but I hope they have more to offer up than that...

EvilYoda and someone else (DeathBUA?) played it... they said the remote is difficult to get used to in Excite Truck. Not so much in Wii Sports. One of the early racing games (NFS Carbon?) will come with a steering wheel that you put the remote into, that should make it easier.

So, wait...it's the same as the 360 (which we knew from the HW spec), but the 360 came out a year ago and cost way less. Thanks sony marketing machine!

Hmmm... I wouldn't base too much off of Excite Bike. I think the Wii is going to take a bit longer to get used to than a simple in store demo can provide. Everyone is so used to controllers and KB/mouse that it's going to be a big change for virtually any gamer.

Do I expect it to replace more traditional control schemes? Hell no. I don't think it's going to work very in well in some genres and people aren't always going to be in the mood to be waving their arms around when they just want to kick back and play a game. But I DO think it's going to provide a unique gaming experience that no other platform (console or PC) will be able to reproduce.

I'll wait till I've played Zelda, their flagship title, before I make any judgements on the Wii.
