PSA: new Apple Maps

PSA that has now made national news since somebody could actually drive into a river/lake/ocean, so our safety is at stake (and yes, I know there is an Apple forum but this could impact millions of us):

Screenshots posted online appear to show a museum located underneath a river, while the map service seems to deny the existence of the English town Stratford-upon-Avon, where Shakespeare was born. Other users say a search for London directed them to London, Ontario, in Canada, instead of the British capital.

Many customers say they are upset that Apple has removed mentions of public transportation routes or stations from its new map service, a popular feature on the Google system which allowed users to see bus and train schedules at individual stations.

Washington Monument?!

WTF were they thinking with this app? It takes years, if not a decade to get mapping right, just ask Google and Bing when it tried to challenge Google Maps. I would seriously be worried about my safety when using these maps. This is a dealbreaker for me unless there is a workaround to get Google Maps back.

I've used the maps/navigation feature for a couple months (through the beta period) and haven't had an issue. Maybe I'm just lucky to live in an area that was mapped well?

What's wrong with the picture? That sure looks like the Washington Monument.

Heard about dimwits ranting on the radio about this, apparently twitter and tumblr are also filled with similar rants. They just came out with this, give them time, they will fix it, Nobody is flawless, did you expect Apple to delay iFail 5 because of stupid maps? Dimwits who but Apple stuff deserve this.

Seriously, people are complaining about "London" returning London, Ontario, rather than London, England? Well guess what, you morons, if you want to search for the London NOT in this continent, how about you learn how to refine your fucking searches.

I sense some anger towards Apple and it's consumers?

it's not only GPS, the basic Map itself is flawed, maps are used for numerous other things than GPS.

shapefiles are the maps yes, but shapefiles don't do shit unless you know where you are, thus, GPS. Yes, I know phones mostly triangulate with cell towers, but you still call it GPS just for simplicity sake.

They didn't know there was another London?

It's called proper programming. The question of people's stupidity is besides the point, it's about the quality of service from a product people paid for. Dumbass.

not anger, but a sense of pity, hoplelssnes... foregone conclusion. I have iPhone 4 and Galaxy S II, I very well understand why people prefer Apple, perhaps the most attractive feature is its flawless operation, I do feel the difference everyday. But for me, Android can do so much more that there is no competition..

Why are *you* calling *him* a "dumbass?"

FFS! That's exactly what it's doing when a search for "London" directs me to London, Ontario, Canada instead of London, England.

Mapping isn't just drawing some lines and calling it a day. There's a lot of back end GIS data that goes into making them functional and accurate. Which is ultimately the problem with Apple Maps. Google has spent the last eight years creating their mapping program, and have been very meticulous about it. Primarily because Google is first and foremost a search company. As a result, Google Maps is the best and most accurate map product available to consumers.

Apple is first and foremost a hardware design company. They don't have any experience in mapping and search and they're basically starting from scratch. What they've come up with is okay but far from perfect. It will be a very long time before it is perfect, if it ever does. Unfortunately Apple has escalated their war with Google to the detriment of their users, by offering an inferior product. Hopefully Google develops their own proper apps map to replace it.
