PSA: Microsoft no longer sending coffins for 360s

Per Joystiq and anywhere else you want to Google, MS instituted a new policy on May 26th of no longer shipping a box to people who need 360 repairs in order to "expedite the repair process." Which actually makes sense.

Plus side:
MS still pays for the shipping
A few days are shaved off the repair time turn around.

Minus side:
You have to find a box that will fit your 360.

As of May 26th? That's weird, my sister just had a box shipped to her 3 days ago for her RRODbox.

That sucks. Do they cover damages that could occur when shipping, or do they cover the purchase of insurance?

Finding a box and packing material seems like an undue burden, since their boxes were efficient and held the console securely in place for shipment. I'll gladly wait a couple of days in exchange for hassle-free peace of mind. Heck, that's one reason I have a PS3! 🙂

My Lenovo laptop needed to be sent in for repair and they gladly shipped a box to me.

When I shipped my out of warranty 360 to somebody else to get repaired (and USPS eventually lost it), I just used the original 360 box and stuck that in another box that was just a little bigger. It worked well enough but I don't know if everybody holds on to their original boxes.

Fuckers... This will not bode well for them with public opinion of their customer service. CS has been the strong point of this whole RROD mess and this will probably screw them more than they realize.

At least I kept the coffin I received after recieving the refurbed 360 that replaced my first RROD. Should come in handy for the second one. (Sigh...wish I wasn't so certain of that.)

No, I think the worst is over for them in terms of PR and they can get away with this without issue.

I just had a box sent to me a few days ago. 😕

The box didn't look anything like that though.

edit: also, I've sent it back before without them sending me a box. They just had UPS email me a prepaid label. This was last October.

Does MS send you the the box back to you, or do they send it in their own packaging?

If they use their own packaging, I sincerely hope they recycle the box you send.

I just shipped mine out...they made me get my own box

It red ringed in oct and i got a box but never sent it in...just sent it in now and they wanted me to pay for it lol (because they gave me free shipping in oct and never used it)

I tell them this will be my 5th xbox and I am less then impressed with this process...that got me free shipping

I had my RROD around January... they didn't send me a box then. Just a prepaid label.

Working at a place that packs and ships things... means I probably packed my 360 better than anyone ever has before...
I had a 5" solid layer of bubble wrap...

I had the same thing in January. I had to package it up myself which was really annoying. They paid for shipping though.

i've found that when dealing w/ stuff online that finding a RIGHT SIZED box to ship things in is a big hassle. i keep boxes around from my purchases, but they're either too small or way too big to fit items in that i want to ship.
