This is just a PSA to let people know how shitty LA Fitness is in general as a business practice. This may get long winded and kind of convoluted because there are a few issues I had, but I will try...

So I joined bally's in 2000 and had been a member since. I paid my annual dues every year in early May. I had no credit card on file or anything. I would simply come in one day in May, my card wouldn't scan due to my membership expiring, and I'd pay again for a full year ($254).

This past November or so, LA Fitness bought out bally's, and my gym turned into an LA fitness. Prior to that, it had already started to fall apart and they would never fix anything that broke. AC wouldnt work half the time, macines broken, lockerrooms never cleaned, etc. I only stayed there because it was cheap, close to where I live, and i've worked out with the same people for years.

There had also been rumors for YEARS they were going to tear this gym down to build condo's. Nothing ever came of it. Additionally, there is an LA Fitness Signature club down the street. However, to upgrade to a signature membership, they told us it would be about $30/month MORE than what we pay, after some ridiculous initiation fee.

So last Monday when I go to the gym, there were signs posted in the gym stating that the gym would be closing for good May 15th at 2pm (yesterday) and that everyone who goes here can now go to the signature club down the street and our membeships would transition. I asked 3 different people to confirm this, and they told us we could go there Tuesday and all would be well.

So yesterday I go there with my 2 other lifting buddies. Apparently the other LA Fitness lied to us. Only people who's "home gym" (ie, the one you signed your papers in to become a member in) was the gym that closed down, meant you could transition to this new one free of charge.

I was okay because I joined there. However my 2 buddies weren't ok because one joined in Seattle, WA (we're in Maryland), and one joined at another one in MD. Even though we had been lifting for 5+ years in the one that closed, it did not matter.

So my 2 buddies sat down with the sales guy to see how much it would cost them to join. one guy was an "enrollment" fee of $400 + $45/mo. the other guy was an enrollment fee of over $1k and $849/yr. Yes ... $849 a year.

Oh and while I was there and my buddies were with the sales guys, I walked around the gym to check it out (i had been there before, but off peak hours - this was 6pm my normal time) and the place was RIDICULOUSLY crowded. it makes sense though since it was already a gym with regulars, but now there were even more from the gym that closed down the street. On top of that, they give out towels and have a basketball court there, BUT if you were a "transitioned" member like I was, they would not give you a towel or let you in the basketball courts lol.

There were countless other people there furious about this whole ordeal. One guy had a lifetime membership to Bally's that worked at the one he always went to and was opened there, but they had no way to transfer it and were looking to charge him some ridiculous amount for it.

So since my buddies couldn't join there, and we have like 3 other gyms we could go to, I told them I wanted to cancel my membership. Of course I didn't care because it was just about to expire soon anyways.... or was it!

So they pull my information up and told me I renewed for 1 year on May 7th. I told them no way that could have happened because my information isn't on file and my membership never expired like it used to, then I would pay a year for it.

He then told me that I had an agreement with bally's that if my membership expired and I was still using the facilities for a few days after that, they would auto-renew my account. I told them no I never had anything like that, and if I did, to show me where I signed. I explained what always happened year in and year out with bally's.

He then told me no, I had an agreement with bally's. then I informed him that they aren't bally's, so even if i DID have an agreement with them, I had no agreement with LA Fitness. Again I told him to show me where I authorized this and he said it was in the contract I signed. I kept asking him to show it to me and he couldn't.

So I basically said ok well if you don't want to refund me, then I will do a chargeback to my CC. I asked if they really wanted me to do that and the guy was just being a fucking dick about it all. Being lazy as shit and didn't want to help anything. So I just left and was going to do a chargeback with AMEX.

I got home and tried to search a corporate member service number and could not find one on the website. When you try to contact them on the website, it puts you in touch with the local gyms. So I found another local one and called them. They told me "the woman who handles this is out for today but she will be in tomorrow morning and can call you" so i left my information with them.

Today I didn't have a call back by 11:30am so I called the same one asking to speak to the lady. The woman on the phone said "well it's not a lady, but it is this man named John, let me find him for you hold please." So I was on hold for like 2 minutes and it disconnected.

I called back and the same lady picked up. I told her it disconnected and she told me "oh well he is in a hiring meeting right now he can call you afterwards" and I told her I was told that spiel yesterday and didn't have a call back yet. I ended up leaving my number for a call back.

An hour later, still no call back. So I googled LA Fitness corporate phone number and found one.

I got on the phone with a corporate person who actually could help! I was shocked. I ended up telling him the situation, and he kept trying to tell me basically the same thing as everyone else, but he had a dick attitude at this point. Eventually he was like 'do you just want to be refunded?' and I of course said "yes and you can prorate it for the time I've used since then, since it has been a week or two.

he then told me "ok well i've issued the refund for $242 which is the $254 - the days you used the facility, you should see it back on the AMEX in 5-7 days"

So finally I got somewhere after all this bullshit. i asked if i would receive something in the mail or email about this, because i want to be sure i'm refunded. so if i don't see anything in my account 5-7 days from now i'm going to be pretty livid. but i wouldn't put it past them.

so yea ... stay as far away as possible. this place sucks and is a scam and a half just like bally's always was. google all the horror stories if you don't believe me.

i'm going to join a new gym today as well that is only $20/mo and just as close/convenient, and the other peole I work out with are also going there.

That's terrible. Terrible Customer Service is one of biggest reasons I never joined a chain gym. My gym is local and there's a price premium but the staff and facilities are awesome. It doesn't have tons of squat racks but people hardly use them and the most i've waited is 10 minutes.

It's always clean, machines get fixed, people re-rack their own weights, pool is immaculate, and the cross fit people let regulars workout for free a few times a month at no cost.

I agree, bad customer service. Enough to make me not want to join. I go to Fitness first and have never had any issues. It's more of the neighborhood gym than the meat factory's some others are but I like the environment and my dues have not gone up in 4 years.

i ended up signing up to the new gym yesterday. first 2 months free, $20/mo afterwards. just have to commit for a year then its month-to-month. so much nicer in general. i had been there before just once so I knew how it is, but it's still good to know i have a new home.

additionally, my one buddy told me that his quoted price was not $859/yr ... it was $400/month LOL.

WHAT?!

$400/mo is stupid crazy. were they trying to wean down their membership because of the huge influx from the closed down bally's or something?

i have no clue how or why they operate like they do, but it's just stupid as shit. i talked to at least 3 people yesterday at the new gym who were from the old one i went to who all had horror stories as well.

I have a membership @ Average Joe's for pretty cheap. There is a globogym across the street but the management is crappy, and the prices are too high.

I was there few times; nice equipment but the place is full of overconfident jocks and their poll stinks. The water is milky from chlorine.
I'll stick to Y as they have a dedicated water quality guy who goes around all Ys in the region and monitors the quality of the water...

I have probably a half-dozen friends who workout at various LA fitnesses around Atlanta and haven't ever mentioned any problems, but I'm not sure if any of them have ever had to try to contact customer service. I've gone in as a visitor on one-week guest passes a few times to two or three of the locations myself, and after they gave me the typical spiel, they were actually surprisingly good about essentially leaving me alone (not that I would've blamed them for continuing to try to sell me on a membership).

The one or two times I sat down with a salesperson, I told them how much I paid for Bally's (this was a few years ago, and like the OP, my membership was right around $200/year); the guy just smiled and said there's no way he could match that, so he didn't blame me for foregoing a transfer. I think back then, he said the best he could do was maybe $40/month.

I think the "home gym" strategy is fairly common when companies are bought out, though. I remember back when Bally's bought Crunch Fitness, Crunch members were only allowed to workout at their home facility; they had to transfer over to a Bally's membership if they wanted to go anywhere else.

All in all, though, I wouldn't blame anyone for joining a local gym rather than a chain. They're almost universally cheaper and with nicer/more knowledgeable staff. The main advantage to the latter, of course, is just the variety of locations.

Dang man. We have a place up here near Hartford called Wow Gym. Ten bucks a month, $40 annual fee. That's it.

That's a pretty rough experience. AT&T is the same way for business accounts...no departments talk to each other, the whole experience is just painful. Crazy that these companies exist to serve customers and just can't do it well.

Those gym salesman remind me of slimy car salesman, they are just looking to rip people off. You and the people you've spoken with should post your bad experiences with that gym to Yelp. Perhaps corporate will do something about it if enough people complain?

Protip: Sign up for LA fitness using the employee discount. $30/month, no initiation fees

Yeah I did that for a while- they require you to mail something in to cancel but other than that I really didn't have any issues with them.

Yesterday I cancelled my membership after being a member for two consecutive years and using this facility on a regular basis (3-5 times per week). I really want you to take a look at the situation in LA Fitness club located at 9350 Bathurst Street, Vaughan, ON, L6A 4N9.

Recently the club was overloaded with new members (I understand that it is very good for business in general) and it seems like it has no reasonable limit of people - new members are still coming. As a result of growing number of members the waiting line for some machines increased from 10-15 minutes to half an hour or even more. You pretty much have to "book" next machine by notifying somebody who works on it that you will be the next and asking him to tell this to the other people (in case if they want to work on the same machine).

Because of extensive usage of machines lots of them become broken and you can see sign "out of order" for a weeks. It creates additional load on machines that still in working order.

As a regular user who pays my monthly fees I am very dissapointed that all these above mentioned factors does not affect my payments - I pay same amount for much worse conditions than it was before.

Yesterday when I and my friends expressed our disappointments to one of the worker (he did not give me his name as well as a manager of facility declined to give me his business card) he said that if we don't like something it's easy to cancel membership and resolve our concerns in "easy way". He did not offer us any
alternative way of excercising. What was completely astonishing - this employee (who looks like in his middle 20) called me (in my 46) "dude" and keep conversation in a tone like I was his kindergarden buddy. When we went to the manager's office, the manager seems like agree with his employee beahvior and processed the cancelation of my membership. It looked like manager completely does not care about his employee beahviour and customer's satisfaction.

Me and my friends have a strong impression that LA Fitness is a great facility to workout but we have to swith to another gym because we don't want to pay for the way current management treating us. As well I really want to raise this issue in social networks to make people aware of what could happen to them.

I go to an LA Fitness, I think we ended up paying $250 initiate fee, and $20 per month ... I had to cancel at some point... and moved. Now the only gym within 10~ miles that isn't one of those shitty hole in the strip mall ones is another LA Fitness. So I pay $40 for me and another $30 for my GF to go here...so about $70 per month.

Oy, wish it was just a flat 30 per head. If I cancel, it ends up being like 2 months out, because of some bullshit about having to mail them the cancellation, and then waiting an extra month.

The facility is nice, not too busy, but I wish the price was a little lower per month.

I go there as well when they bought out Pure Fitness in AZ.

The only reason I stayed was because they kept the same price a month of $19 and 17.85 for my wife and I. If they raise the price I would leave.

Still don't know if I am going to stay or switch to a smaller gym fitness1.

I got a company discount through work, that was no initiation and $30/mo, including all clubs. Without the discount they wanted $99 setup fee, $35/mo for single club.

I used to go to Life Time when I was in Tulsa, loved it even though it was very expensive ($105/mo for my wife and I). LA Fitness is basically the only half way decent option in OKC. The gym is brand new, and the weights area is very nice, but everything else is basically just okay. The AC sucks, no airflow and they are almost no water fountains, not even by the pool. The class are mediocre at best too, for example the spin instructors repeat the same class every single day. But it is clean and I never have to wait to use anything.
