I'm building an esx build around an 8350 and 32GB of ram. I want to OC the 8350 to 4.5+ ghz but would love to be using intel as their chips would provide better encoding performance probably. Nonetheless, I'm curious to try vishera and the 990FX and tinker with gpu passthrough...

still it's frustrating that I can't get a K series cpu from intel without vt-d/and vt-x...

i7-3930k, 3960x and 3970x all support VT-d and VT-x, just make sure you get a C2 stepping.

Check the description line:

This product includes VT-d support only on the C2 stepping. Stepping information can be viewed via the menu on the left.

The 3970x has it listed correctly since it came out after the C2 stepping was released.

The day you see 8 core desktops 16 threads is not now. Not until 2015 or 2016 ......

Be happy you got a six core 12 thread Sandy E ...........then Ivy Bridge E in Q3 2014 6 core 12 threads....... in 2014 Haswell 12 threads for dukes of hazzard. So its 2015 and no 8 core 16 thread yet........ for desktop users. Don't give up hope my friend LOL
