QFT! After 34 years, my own mother has decided to finally get her citizenship as well; and, from what I've seen of the process, it takes real character and tenacity to make it through every hoop.

Congrats Halik, and WELCOME! I wish you all the best here in what is now our great country! 😉

Quick question to those congratulating him: how many of you also think he should have never have the right to be president?

Me. Some things have to remain sacred for U.S. born citizens. And it's the law anyway.

But congrats Halik. Good for you

Laws can be changed, and such ugly, discriminatory laws should definitely be changed. This is actually a pretty good example of stupid, reactionary conservatism - not standing for something out of principle or well thought out reasons, but solely because it's the status quo.

If I had to take a guess, I'd say the correlation between people who whine about immigrants not assimilating, about people calling themselves ______ - American and people who believe in second-class citizenship is pretty damn high.

So let me translate: "But congrats Halik. Good for you ... but you'll always be a foreigner "

But his kids, if they're born here, will be true Americans. Sorry, but I have no desire to see every tradition and value in this country overturned by you lefties. I firmly believe traditions sometimes have to trump "principle and reason" to preserve culture.

You know, if this were the 60s, you'd be using the exact same argument against the civil rights movement, and if it were the 20s, you'd be telling women they can't vote... cause that's the things have always been, and must therefore always be

Not necessarily. I'm actually a pretty fair guy with a pretty informed moral conscience so I'll simply say I'm not sure how I would have reacted had I grown up in those times. But thanks anyway for stopping by to threadcrap...

Some people tend to have wildly inflated opinions of themselves. If you think second-class citizenship is ok because of vague whinings about culture and tradition than you couldn't be further removed from someone with a "pretty informed moral conscience".

brencat he has a point. I've lived here since age 1 and am just as American as any other (going to hit 23 years very soon), would you deny the fact that I am a "true" American? What is a "True" American? Someone who was simply born here? You make it sound like something goes further than that, when the reality is a "True" american - if we want to define people like that - are going to be those who grew up here and understand the people and culture.

In principle I can't be a president even though I probably care more than some douches who were born here and don't give two shits.

I do believe there is a miiinor issue with this...but thankfully since its restricted to the presidency (something which almost none of us will ever be) it isn't as big of a deal, I wouldn't want to be president anyways...but your reference that naturalized citizens are not true Americans is just bullcrap.

This is what you posted in a thread a couple of years ago regarding the Canadian Queen who is the Head of State of Canada under archaic bloodline & religious requirements:

I don't mind it really. Its kinda like a pet for the whole country, or a minor indulgence. You spend some minor sum, but you preserve some traditions and a link to the past.

In any case, hardly an issue worth debating about.

Good to see that you have changed and entered the 21st century. I don't see many Canadians becoming progressive on the issue.
