PSA: George Carlin is not funny

I decided to try a new comic. Alot of people list him as one of the greatest ever. I listened to his 1990 Explicit Lyrics album since i found a review on a comedy web site saying that it was his best album.

What I found:
1) He swears alot
2) He swears lot
3) He has horrible punch lines
4) He basically takes a topic and spends 2 minutes trying to say the same thing differently.
5) has absolutely no wit

He makes Gallagher look like his show is full of wit.

Seriously, did this album just have all the intelligent punch lines taken out? It seemed so fluid. Amazing editing I guess.

For example, early on the album he was talking about how rape can be funny. Along with some stupid witless examples that any 14 year old could come up with by saying a random verb, a random noun and rape. Raped by a slow moving oxen. Fucking great! Why am I not in show business? No miraculous connotations. Just foul mouthed stupidity. I was listening later into the act and he came to rape and made a half way decent joke. But he could have said "See, I told you .... rape can be funny", it would have been perfect. Maybe in part because most of his earlier rape tirade lasted tooo long and was not funny. It was as though the entire conversation earlier wasn't there. And the delivery was such that it didn't have to be.

Seriously, this is the "best" we have done in the past 50 years?

Someone tell me that this album actually sucked or in some way convince me to give him a second chance.

Never heard the album, but Carlin's awesome. I'm not a big comedy fan, but him and Hicks are my two favorites.

Hicks might have ruined comedy for me.

I might have to try another album of Carlins. Next time I go for a run, I'll toss one on my phone.

Like all comedy, they aren't all gems, but as a whole, Carlin's great. I like what he was doing in the 90s. There's a bunch of it on Youtube.

Not every Carlin joke is a classic, but he has enough that are really good.

Perhaps, Larry the Cable Guy would be more up your alley?

Carlin was active in the 90s? Try the 70s and 80s.

I couldn't really get behind Steve Martin as a stand-up comedian, particularly without the visuals of seeing his stage performance. Listening to one of his stand-up routines on vinyl, my friend thought he was hilarious and I often found myself faking or exaggerating my laughter just to go along with my friend. I wonder if my friend was doing the same.....

What's better than a 69.
A 71,,, which is a 69 with a finger up in each butt...

That's not a PSA, that's a declaration of ignorance.

Talking shit about Carlin is kinda like bad mouthin someone's mom. I'd secure that shit private.

Agreed. That is the type of confession that gets people divorced and fired from their jobs :colbert:

Carlin was mostly topical humor. When he first came out his scathing anti-establishment shtick was cutting edge. That edge was lost over the years but it doesn't diminish his greatness. You just have to comprehend that greatness in the context of the times.

I agree, Carlin is not at all funny.

However, tapes of his pre-mortum performances are still pretty funny.

For me, Carlin was never a laugh out loud comic so much as a "oh wow, I hadn't thought of it that way" comic. Hicks had a bit of that too, but he made me outright laugh more.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Even if it isn't a very good one. :colbert:

Carlin and Pryor influenced and inspired so many current comedians that they basically invented modern stand-up.

OP realizes, of course, that Carlin is in the top 5 of every single list of the greatest comedians of all time, yes?

Or is this one of those:

"I don't like him...thus he's not good"

things?

You didn't go back far enough. His Thomas the Train years are his best. The bit where Percy and Thomas go off the tracks is a classic.

every single list? He was great, but that still might be a bit of a stretch.
