For anyone a little unclear on why Carlin is such a big deal, I think Louis CK gave a great personal rundown and just why George was so great. It's a short clip, and worth it. I don't think I've ever heard Louis get so close to getting choked up on stage before. I can empathize with his kick in the balls reaction to news of George passing. Hearing about people you admire passing is always sad, but with Carlin it was different. I got to meet him once, back in the 90s, through an extended family member who worked for Viacom after the MTV acquisition (dude also grew up down the street from Jon Stewart!) I was a star struck kid at the time who just sat there in disbelief. No deep conversation or advice to impart from it I'm afraid, I was too engrossed in his banter to ask anything.

I think if we ever build a monument to onstage comedy, it should be a Rushmore like collection of busts featuring Rickles, Pryor and Carlin. You know who isn't invited.

No, mostly a Bill Hicks fan. He's mostly early 90s. But a lot of what he talks about is still relevant (like the abortion debate in this country) or how most people in the USA are unresolved beings. And things like gun control ... still totally relevant. Here's the thing. From what I have heard of George Carlin, nothing he said was relevant starting on the day he opened his mouth. OK though. Tomorrow he gets another chance from me. I added 3 albums to my phone and I'll try them out during my run. Maybe he snuck in something relevant or witty.

Also like Louis C.K. hard not to if you have Netflix.

I also went to a Jim Breuer show once. I enjoyed it mostly be cause he is about my age and has kids and his show was a lot about kids and marriage. See, he was actually telling stories but he added wit to them. It was extremely well produced. It was honestly more like seeing a one man play than a comedian. That's what happens when you advance your comedy career though. You spend more time rehearsing and it is more and more scripted. Things like producers and directors are added to the mix to iron out delivery and fix jokes that don't work.

And the occasional stop to the local comedy store is usually enjoyable. It can be hit and miss though.
Just goes to show how much is taste I suppose. I love Carlin and Hicks but strongly suspect that Louis C.K. might actually be funnier after death. I find him to be an anti-humor node.

Replace Carlin with Kinison or Dice Clay and maybe we can have a real conversation. I admit Carlin let me down once. His show was basically him reading new material. The delivery stunk. We were definitely unimpressed but it's still Carlin so he still gets a pass.

Carlin was not out 100% to make you laugh, he was trying to make you think.

This is how I took his work. He isn't some Dane Cook/Fluffy/Jeff Dunham that was up their making weird noises and doing silly shit. His topics were about real life events/feelings & thoughts of the time period, and he was relatable. He was a thinking man's comic and I enjoyed his routines.

OP is listening to comedy routine from 25 years ago and is surprised that its not funny to him?

Maybe because its 25 years out of context?

Now that I think about it a big part of Carlin's genius was he rarely resorted to any sort of stereotyping/racial material.

Carlin was fantastic. I tend to prefer the angry/pissed off ranting style.... That said, I do find Lewis Black material more to my liking, but, Carlin is gone now, so he is fading from legendary to mythical.

If you don't laugh at this, there's something wrong with you.

It also shows how well rehearsed/intelligent he is.

I'll be honest, I'm a huge fan of George Carlin, but that has to be some of his worst shit.

I tried to watch through that. Too much of the retarded junk. He is most funny when he is on the subject of politics and ethics. Not shit fuck fart wise and beautiful woman stuff.

based on one of your posts in here about a comedian dealing with family, you might like this guy. Granted, i only remember this act/show. Not sure how anything else he's done was

or you might like Robin Harris's BeBe's Kids stuff.

how was your 2nd shot of Carlin?

Edit: to be clear, Robin Harris's BeBe's kids stuff, while about GF and kids, i wouldn't recommend watching it with kids.
