Likely due the gas corporate honchos are trying to sabotage Obama's chance for re-election. Since all the repubs are in their pockets anyway.

I said it before and I'll say it again. I hope gas goes past $5 well into the 7 or 8 dollar range.

You will stop hoping when you realize almost everything you consume has to be trucked in and all the extra cost to get it to you will wind up right in your lap..

I stopped reading as soon as I read Prius. Hipsters have no credibility whatsoever.
I've never been confused with a hipster before - that's for sure. I guess you're a little bent out of shape because I bought a sensible car and am well insulated against changes in gas prices while you're stuck on the bus. :whiste:

Why is it that these companies see record profits but seemingly fail to invest in their own infrastructure to prevent all of these failures and breakages?

Blaming regulations is scapegoating. Companies want the money that comes from this business, so they should be prepared for the investments required.

Too much demand even today. We actually need prices to go higher. Push innovation and economies.

Exxon spent almost $40B in capital improvements and projects in 2011.

I'm not scapegoating regulations, I'm pointing out that they are just as much of an issue as Corporation's management.

Here's the problem: Once a regulation is put in place, usually behind the scenes, the public is never aware of it's effects. But, we are constantly reminded of a Corporation's profits, because it's public news. There is blame to go around for everyone and based on the news I've read and heard, the regulations are at the heart of this issue.

That's because your wife drives that Sonata like it's a Genesis Coupe.

Actually it was me driving the first month to see what it could do - she didn't need it right away. On pure highway it was 34mpg, but in town after I reset the trip meter for a few days, it was only 18mpg. I wasn't even being aggressive... just town stop and go driving. My point is, if that car is getting crap mileage when it's supposed to be way higher, most cars are suffering regardless of how fuel efficient it's supposed to be. EPA mileage for local is crap. Was wrong for my car too.

The time will come but maybe not this year. Once the situation between Iran and Israel gets explosive then you can bet on gas going over $10 a gallon as international trade begins to breakdown.

Because they get rewarded with higher prices and record profits for being incompetent.

If you were incompetent in your job would you be rewarded with bonuses and record raises?

This is where our Government fails us.

Americans deserved to get every bit as screwed over up the ass as we are allowing this to happen.

Make it $20 a gallon or higher.

Monopoly. There is no competition in the gasoline/diesel industry, period. We are idiots to keep going the same direction and not going the way of countries like Brazil.

We should have a public option for gas. YOu can still buy the gas you want from your favorite big oil co, but the option is there if you want it. But if you dont buy it, there'll be taxe..... errrr.... fines.

If the US government would develop something that would remove oil from the picture and would allow us to tell the Middle East to pound sand, I would be all for it, even at a higher cost than now (especially if it put people to work here to make the stuff).

Just stopped by my local Costco in Irvine this morning around 8am. No line and paid 4.55/gallon. Filled my car up and then went back and filled up the wifes car. However looks like they are setup for big lines later in the day. They have part of the parking lot setup with shopping carts for cars to lineup for the gas station.

We didn't learn a damn thing from the 70's/80's, did we? Not a damn thing.

Wow they jumped another 30 cents since Thursday.

Well Costco and lines for gas isn't a unusual thing. Sometimes before big holidays their can be major lines for gasoline. You can still drop by a normal gas station like a Shell or Chevron and fill up without a issue.

Some posters aren't listening to you. Looking at the map I posted, Cali is way high on the $$ even compared to the states next door. Thank Cali regulations.

Calif. gas prices hit all-time high

The price of gasoline hit an all-time average high in California of $4.6140 a gallon Saturday, fueled by a reduced supply and a volatile market.

Saturday's price was the highest in the nation, with the Golden State leapfrogging Hawaii this week as the state with the most expensive fuel.

The price of diesel has also increased, adding significant costs for truckers who typically put hundreds of dollars of fuel in their tanks. It's gotten so bad, some truckers may stop driving altogether, said Michael Shaw, spokesman for the California Trucking Association, whose members move 80 percent of the cargo on California's roads each year.

Calif. gasoline prices hit all-time high - twice

Gasoline prices in California rose to another all-time high on Sunday after passing a four-year high a day earlier, according to AAA.

The four-cent-per-gallon jump Sunday was even bigger than Saturday's jump

AAA reported in its latest update on Sunday that the statewide average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline is $4.655. Saturday's average of $4.6140 was the highest since June 19, 2008, when it was $4.6096.

Sunday's price, like Saturday's, was the highest in the nation

Californians are paying 24 cents per gallon more than motorists in Hawaii, according to the AAA report. In some locations, fuming motorists paid $5 or more per gallon while station owners had to shut down pumps in others.
