I have 800 + GB and its not enough

800GB is next to nothing. o_O I consider my server to be small, and it houses 3x 3TB, 1x 4TB and 1x 2TB.

You even use more bandwidth than me. I'm at 354GB, 474GB and 436GB with 324GB for this month so far.

i wonder how 800TB compares to the total data on the intertrons

edit: 295 exabytes. so approx 1/3 of 1/1000th.

Hell, the company I work for moves less than half of what that guy does each month. That's including all internet traffic, SAN replication, VOIP and everything else we send across the wire. And a big chunk of that never hits the internet, it's MPLS traffic.

I have about 12TB of storage, only about a 1/4 of it is used.

Personally though, I'm tired of companies doing the "unlimited" on paper then backpeddling when people take them up on it. There is no consumer protection these days. One of these companies needs taken down a peg. Sure maybe it's abuse, but come on, they are selling unlimited to draw people in. If they can "scam" so can the people paying for the service.

He got in trouble because his usage violated the TOS, not because of his usage amount, though the amount was probably was prompted the further investigation in the first place

I wish there were companies that sold affordable home and especially mobile/cell internet plans simply based on line speed like some companies do for hosting. Unmetered plans, not the "unlimited" plans which aren't unlimited. How they legally get away with redefining the English language is beyond me. For home it's not like I would ever use 77TB (well, not in the near future, as I'm not streaming 5400p video or downloading 200GB games just yet), but caps shouldn't exist for unlimited plans, period.

EDIT: I exaggerate. It's not really beyond me, I know it's that way because we allow it to be and agree to the contract terms.

This. Verizon's cap is not 77TB.

Inaccurate reporting from Ars. Boo.

That said... holy shit @ this guy. We just bought a new SAN that's 18 TB for our company (which wasn't sized right but whatever). This guy has over 10x that space.

Actually two other people were contacted about the same thing (both using more bandwidth than I do). The reason I got the call really has nothing to do with ToS violations but the bandwidth usage.

The guy who was not breaking the ToS (running a web-crawler) was told he could not do that even on small business so getting conflicting reports. I am still not 100% sure they are going to have a problem with me doing this on business due to the conflicting reports.

I have no problems going business I just didn't think it made a difference to VZ really. I mean why go through the trouble to get $30-60 more from a few select customers per month?

Also considering VZ is probably still profitable even with my heavy usage I don't see why they would bother going after people but my $0.02

You can see more of my reasoning behind the profitability thing on the dslreports thread if you don't think that is the case.

How is 209TB of raw storage much? I have 800+ TB on my server and its not enough space. I love that last line like that is anything but one HDD these days

I hate how unlimited is not really unlimited. They should just be upfront about it. 77TB is a ton of data though, I only did about 1.6TB in the past year! If I had more bandwidth though I could see myself use way more as I'd host my sites at home.

I have not been doing any torrents or much downloading lately, I only moved 36GB both ways in the last 30 days lol.

i dont know... i can understand why people complain about comcast's 300GB soft cap, but even that is a lot of headroom to play with.

77TB was allowed and they didnt cut him off because of the amount of data... even if it was because of the data amount, that would be really hard to complain about. that is an astronomical amount of traffic...

I wonder how much I can download from Comcast before they cut me off?

They say that their 250 GB cap is no longer enforced, but something tells me that I'll get an angry e-mail once I get up to half a TB.

How many dedicated storage racks do you have at home for just storage? Most people probably don't have all of that. Heck, even I don't, and I have 2 42U server racks. (one is completely empty though :p)

I guess there's always backblaze pods but those arn't cheap.

There are a few 24 bay cases available out there (just ordered one myself actually) so say you fill a 42U server rack with them that gives you 144 drive bays. Now let's say you filled those with 4TB drives that gives you 576TB, but WAIT, drive manufacturers don't use the same TB that we know. It would not be 576TB but 523TB. Then consider raid loss, since you'd definitly not raid 0 the entire thing.

So yeah you could maybe get around 500TB or so in a 42U server rack, but that's not what I'd call typical. I'd be curious to see your setup if you really have 800+ though...

I stream netflix in HD all the time and regularly hit 300+gb and haven't heard a peep.

LOL

Is it sad that I recognized the server rack in the ars article from a youtube video I saw maybe 5 months ago? As soon as I saw that pic, the dudes voice popped into my head describing his ridiculous home rack setup.

I have unlimited data but my 15mb/s speed limits how much I could download in a month. Works out to be about 5TB max if I completely saturated my bandwidth every second of every day. What this dude is downloading is a lifetime's worth of data at my current usage.

The server rack he's got looks like the ones we use at the TV station

Yea. For some reason I am dyslexic and read that as GB, even when typing it as TB. I guess 209 TB is quite a lot

I have 800 + GB and its not enough

Wow. What were you downloading in April. That is a huge spike for you

800gb is less than one drive these days...I have 15TB.

That's definitely a nice rack. Better than mine. I will be putting in one of those 24 bay Supermicro arrays in though. Waiting for some parts.
