PSA: FedEx is changing its signature policy!!

Got this letter in my email today from FedEx:

Dear FedEx Customer,

FedEx is changing our residential delivery policy and introducing three new signature options to improve delivery commitments and provide a consistent experience for customers across the FedEx network.

* Residential deliveries: FedEx will no longer require a signature on FedEx Express® deliveries.
* Nonresidential deliveries: No policy change. FedEx will attempt to obtain a signature from someone at the delivery address or a neighboring address, and no fee will apply.

Introducing FedEx® Delivery Signature Options
New signature options enhance delivery flexibility and give you peace of mind.

* Indirect Signature Required. FedEx will obtain a signature 1) from any person at the delivery address or 2) from someone at a neighboring address or 3) the recipient can leave a signed FedEx door tag authorizing release of the package without anyone present. Available for residential deliveries only. Fee: $1.50.*
* Direct Signature Required. FedEx will obtain a signature from any person at the delivery address and will reattempt delivery if no one is available to sign for the package. Available for both residential and nonresidential deliveries. Fee: $2.*
* Adult Signature Required. FedEx will obtain a signature from any person at the delivery address who is at least 21 years old and who has government-issued photo identification as proof of age, and we will reattempt delivery if no one is available to sign for the package. Available for both residential and nonresidential deliveries. Fee: $2.75.*

Direct Signature Required replaces FedEx Express Signature Required, FedEx Ground® Auto P.O.D., FedEx Home Delivery® Auto P.O.D. and FedEx Signature Home DeliverySM. Until Direct Signature Required is available, shippers can still choose these options for a $2 fee.*

Sincerely,

FedEx

That sucks. So, what kind of insurance do they offer if you don't get signature confirmation, but, say, they deliver it to the wrong address or something else like that?

I HATE signing for crap! I work all day long and am never home, I totally love it when they leave stuff on my porch.

How do you figure? According to what the OP has in bold you don't need a signature any more for residential packages. Isn't this a good thing?

For me personally it doesn't matter. If I'm not home they just leave the package in the leasing office. Of course this would change when I get a home.

Yes and no. Now they can leave it no matter what, but it could be a very bad thing if someone else picks it up for you.

It's a good thing I'm always home. But even so, sometimes they don't ring the bell and I don't know it's delivered until I check the site or walk over it when I step out.

finally! I won't have to be home to get a package anymore!

Could have done that years ago by just leaving your signature on file.

They have my sig on file for long time now, but they still never left "technology related items." So I always had to trek to Fedex after work to pick up all my Newegg stuff.

Good idea from Fed Ex's perspective...
probably greatly saves on time waiting for people to answer the door to sign.
But, signature could still be required if you really want it to make sure the recipient actually gets the package.

Personally, I think it's a waste of time to have to sign for $5 items... But, for a computer, lcd, or anything with a decent amount of value, then it's probably worth it to get the signature. I think Fed Ex is thinking about the same thing.
