LOL, I've been setting up my new PS3 trying to stream media through my network when I noticed some tiny "cracks" in my RPTV's display. wtf.......upon closer inspection, it's loaded with cobwebs.

My Philips CRT RPTV has large plastic covers on the rear, Top and bottom. The are attached with several torx screws and the large top section has a couple hangers to help line things up easily.

The panels removed easily, exposing the motherboard and components below, and guns and mirror above. I've had this unit for several years now, so I shouldn't be shocked how full of dust everything was.

The guns had a thick layer of dust accumulated on the lenses (they stick straight up) and the inside of the screen looked like my crawl space under the house with all the cobwebs (only a slight exaggeration).

In any event, I made quick work of the dust and cleaned all the interior black surfaces (looked slightly grey from all the dust) and slapped it back together.

OMG!!! I can't believe the difference! Do yourself a favor and clean your display ASAP

....now back to that PS3......

Long-live the 300lb RPTV! My 57" Toshiba is still going strong, and my mom wont let me give it to her, so I'll just keep using it until it breaks. Maybe I should dust it out...hmmm.

Mine had a paper tag inside with "Shift1 2002" printed on it. That makes ~ 6 years old. 1080i/480p CRT based w/7" guns. D-Sub/RGB/YPbPr connectivety (no digital connects)

Sure looks sweet with HD video (again) ;) Won't be needing new lamps now for awhile it appears :)

Make sure the mirror is clean if anything else. It's amazing how fast it gets fouled with cigar smokers in the room!

Mirror had a couple of cobwebs hanging from it, but otherwise spotless. I should have taken some :camera:, of the whole mess, but pretty embarrassing.

Wife comes home from work:
Wow, what you do to the TV?

<thinks to self> "Nice, even better than I thought"

when the wife/SO notices, it makes the toughest of efforts seem so worthwhile. :)

The motherboard received the typical canned air PC cleaning. It took the most time since its like the size of 4 PC's down there, but simple and easy.

I blow off the lenses with my canned air, and then gently wipe the lenses with my microfiber cloth for my digi cams. The guns feel pretty secure, and I'm extra careful. My Philips unit has nice manual multi-point convergence adjustment....checking after I finished I didn't notice anything out of whack, so I'm confident that gentle cleaning didn't disrupt the guns.

I wiped down the inside surface of the fresnel lens (inner layer, backside of display screen) with a lightly damp microfiber cloth. I did try to not get to aggressive around the edges because I didn't want it to "wick" moisture between screen layers. I was very tempted to restack my screen....my biggest complaint with this display is the screen glare. I'll give that a go next time I get some time :)

Save a couple hanging cobwebs, the mirror was totally clean...I didn't touch the mirror surface at all. It appear to be some sort of flexible mylar, rather than a standard mirror, which was a bit of a suprise...and probably why it was still clean.

Pretty straightforward and took less than an hour.
