This whole bombardment of confessing a crime on a TV show is just getting way out of hand. Here's how it plays out...on TV

1) You're taken into custody/arrested or "they" show up demanding a cotton swab of your mouth.
2) You agree
3) Then your dumbass confesses

Look people, don't say shit. "Where's my lawyer".

This happens constantly IRL too.
 
But they always trick me with the good cop bad cop routine. 🙁

edit: It also doesn't help if they cuff you to the table and place a plate of bacon and waffles just out of reach and moving it further the longer I stay silent. The Geneva Convention needs to be revised for things like this.
 
Why would you encourage people not to confess if they're guilty? Personally, I think that it's great when people choose to confess their guilt. It saves so much time and money.

Obviously, though, if you're not guilty, you would have nothing to confess.

NEVER confess to anything until after you talk to your lawyer. I don't care what you have done. keep your mouth shut and don't say a damn thing (well besides "i want to talk to my lawyer")

If "The First 48" has taught me anything, it's that murder is rather easy to get away with, so long as your guilt doesn't drive you to a confession.

You really shouldn't talk to the police at all beyond asking if you are being charged with a crime and requesting your legal counsel (which they are legally obligated to give you access to). Innocent people get sent to prison all the time, the police are primarily interested in arrests and the prosecutors are primarily interested in convictions. Actually having the right person is usually a secondary concern.

Don't forget to also make sure your public defender (if you have one) is not an alcoholic or undiagnosed narcoleptic. This seems to to be the main cause of sitting in PMITAP for 15 years for something you didn't do (at least that seems to be the case in all the stories about guys being exonerated years later.)

I love NCIS, but it drives me nuts when Gibbs just glares at someone and they start blabbing. The smart person says "lawyer" then goes mute.

Because this says that ultimately they cannot be required to (not that many have much respect for anything in the document that came from in 2009):

Amendment V

well yeah.

give what you ahve to give (name etc) but it annoys me when watching cops or such and the guy gives him all this information then the guy gets arrested from it.

damn. just give what you have to. where i am driving to is none of your business.just give me the damn ticket and let me go.


then again i don't do anything illegal anymore. hell i don't even speed anymore.

My house used to be a foster care house. We had cops come over at 2-4 am (not sure on the time. woke my ass up) and wanted to come inside and look for someone who lived here like 6 years ago. they got all pissy when i told them no and wouldnt let them in the house. i told them they don't live here and the house was sold to me 2 years before.
