I think I made hydrogen chloride gas and nearly poisoned myself. Toilet bowl was looking a bit dingey, so I poured a little bleach into it with the intention of using a toilet bowl brush. But then I noticed a bottle of liquid toilet bowl cleaner sitting behind the toilet, so I added a little of that too. I thought it was just the detergent-based stuff, but it was that "Works" cleanser that is basically a solution of hydrochloric acid.

SHIT! The resulting solution turned yellow-green and created a really noxious gas. I inhaled just a little bit of it and immediate exhaled as far as I could because it burned, held my breath, opened the window and ran out of the bathroom, closing the door and turning on the exhaust fan behind me. Then ran 10 feet further before I inhaled. Throat, trachea, and lungs were burning a bit (not badly) for a couple minutes but its better now.

Home chemistry is fun!

lol, yes. that is bad. I did something similar several years ago, bringing in our lab grade, 10% bleach, mixing with one of those grout cleaners (CLR) or such with phosphoric acid = BAD NEWS.

I also used to spray 75% EtOH while taking a shower for quick, easy preventive cleaning. This is like bathing in 180 proof vodka. ....do not do that, either.

Funny, last I checked anything 180 proof was considered a good thing.

sure, but no one said it was a good idea to surround yourself with a steaming vapor of absinthe-strength spirits.

well, if anyone did say that, they certainly never tried it.

I found a janitor passed out in the back of a cafeteria when I was working there in high school.
He had mixed bleach and oven cleaner together and it knocked him out.
They had to evacuate the building because of it.
I didn't smell much when I found him, but everyone panicked so they evacuated anyway.

You made mustard gas... and didn't know what you were doing?

See, this is why warning labels exist. For dumbasses like you to ignore them and almost kill themselves or others.

I got to use some 99.999% EtOH in the lab. Stuff smells like candy.

yeah, we only purchase it at "100%" It's generally cut to 70-80% for various other purposes. You generally need 100% and 70% for DNA extractions. I used to use 100% for EtOH precipitation, but not so much anymore. Still use it for purifying RNA, though.

There has been talk of making our own lab brandy... :hmm:

Well like I said, I thought the toilet bowl cleaner was the detergent-based stuff, not an acid. At least, that's what was there a few months ago.
