PSA: Don't keep shrimp in your aquarium

I remember watching a show saying that matis shrimp striking power was like the velocity of a 22 cal bullet.

Cheers,
Aquaman

THANK YOU! I was just about to put a bunch of mantis shrimp in my aquarium and I checked ATOT for any warnings, you just saved me a peice of glass my friend!

Let me find the pics.

People have posted over on reef central of Mantis Shrimps busting their thumb wide open.

I've got a couple in my tank. Smart little buggers they are. You can hear their distinctive "pop, pop, pop" when they are killing stuff or attacking.

The local aquarium had one that busted their glass.

A surfer brought the shrimp in as a juvenile, stuck to his surfboard. It had hit the board and went only part of the way through it.

It was fine in the aquarium's thick glass tank for awhile, until it got bigger. Then, it broke it and had to be moved to a tank with 2" thick glass.

Bubba: Anyway, like I was sayin', shrimp is the fruit of the sea. You can barbecue it, boil it, broil it, bake it, saute it. Dey's uh, shrimp-kabobs, shrimp creole, shrimp gumbo. Pan fried, deep fried, stir-fried. There's pineapple shrimp, lemon shrimp, coconut shrimp, pepper shrimp, shrimp soup, shrimp stew, shrimp salad, shrimp and potatoes, shrimp burger, shrimp sandwich. That- that's about it.

A mantis cracking a tank is pretty rare. I know a lot of people who keep them, and not one has had them bust the glass. They could in a tank with thin glass though. Mantis shrimp are awesome animals. Very intelligent, and very interesting. I keep reefs, and they often come as hitchhikers in the live rock we buy. I've been wanting to setup a mantis tank, but my wife is grossed out by them.
