MY favorite are the 'tards in the state departments of transportation (specifically NJ) who will put up stopsigns at the end of ramps during construction and then completley obstruct your view of the traffic with those barrel cones :|

another stupid onramp thing:
in phoenix they have onramps with a STOP signs right as you are aboutto enter the freeway, so just as maybe you could get up to speed to contend with phoenix traffic (a good 70/80 most days) you are stopped. Thus now you have to get up to speed and merge all within say 500'...and even better are the ones that are dual lane that merge into one that also have the stoplight. So if you pull up next to a 18 wheeler, and he goes first, you have to wait like 3 as long just to maybe get a chance at merging on only to get stuck behind him still.

Around here people STOP on the onramp. These people should have their licenses revoked and then be shot to prevent them from further infecting the human gene pool. Its an onramp, not an intersection you tards.

i agree. if she was not comfortable driving, she should have opted against (1) using a minivan and (2) she should have been with someone who could have raised her confidence. she had no business to drive a larger-sized vehicle alone at her low confidence level.

Unfortunately the #1 solution people like this seem to choose is to buy an even LARGER vehicle, like a Ford Excursion. I guess they figure if they can't control their tiny Ford Festiva, they might as well get a giant Urban Assault Vehicle to protect them in the certain event of an accident. That way, they don't get killed when they cause an accident, someone else does.

my brother-in-law is 18 and a brand new driver. I took him onto the highway a month back for the first time and he had no problem keeping speed... it's just how he inserts himself that's the problem because he has to worry about so many things at once like ramp length, car in front, checking blind spot, matching speeds, staying straight, etc.. For a new driver, it's not easy. Still they need to learn somehow...

Generally speaking, driving too slow is more dangerous than driving too fast. Ideally, one should always match the speed of surrounding traffic (i.e. "go with the flow"). That is safest.

And if "the flow" is too fast?

Fast is a relative term, so I assume you mean faster then the speed limit. Speed limits are artificial, and typically made too low in order to increase revenue generation opportunities for local municipalities. In that case, travelling with the flow of traffic is still safest, up to the abilities of the driver and the condition of vehicle. The issue here is the speed of each vehicle relative to all the others. On the highway/freeway, when every vehicle is travelling the same speed, their relative speeds are zero. Relative to each other, they are literally not moving at all, which is the safest possible traffic environment.

this is sad but true. i believe the SUV that hit my father's car and made it flip over twice was an excursion. evidence indicates that the idiot ran a stop sign at approximately 50mph. fortunately, my father survived (albeit with injuries he will live with forever), but if there was a passenger in the car, it would have been the end for them.

naturally, the owner of the excursion had no injuries whatsoever.

Then you're on the wrong road... exit and find another route!

If I'm coming down the interstate and there is an entrance ramp. Most times I will not move over to let someone in. If they can get in front of me that means they are going faster than I, if they are not going as fast as I am, then they need to get in back of me. Sometimes I'll move over when the ramp is pretty short.

Just a quick note, for all you n00bs. When you hit the end of the on-ramp its best to be going slightly faster than the traffic you are merging into. Its really much easier to scrub off 5MPH without even using the brakes than to try to gain 5MPH at the end of the ramp.

Well a 60 yr old grandfather got killed yesterday for not speeding up.

His 12 yr old grandson was able to get out of the car after it got rear ended and went on fire but he was pinned behind the wheel and burned up.

Some folks stopped and tried to get him out but couldn't. Cops showed up with extinguishers but it was too late. The cops were pretty shock up.

Your reading comprehension sucks.

Here is a bit of what vic said: "and the condition of vehicle. " It is also in bold, above.

I was getting on the freeway once behind some stupid b1tch in an SUV. She is on the onramp at 30mph. She merges onto the freeway at 40 mph, meanwhile i'm behind going WTF? She then proceeds to move into the fast lane still not even doing 50 mph. Jeez.

This is by far my number one pet peeve. And, for some reason, PA seems to have th shortest onramps, so they are always backed up by idiots afraid to hit the accelerator.

I totally agree. Merging slowly onto the highway warrants a pull over by the police, it's not proper, it's friggin dangerous!

That and the fact I like the onramps as fast as possible in my car, the bank turns are just too much fun :)

Something similar happened to me about 2 weeks ago. This guy in a fairly new Trailblazer was going down an onramp at about 35 mph. He was talking on his phone. By the time we get to the interstate there are a series of tractor trailers and no way for them to get over. They begin to slow down to let him speed up and merge in front of them and yes by this time we are in the emergency lane. So what does he do but SLOW down. That?s when I opened up and went around his ass in the damn grass and gravel throwing rocks all over his SUV ( I was driving a 4.3L V6 S10). I then went back onto the emergency lane and merged ahead of the tractor trailers.

Freaken idiots.
