PSA: Don't get on the highway doing 30Mph

I feel really bad about this, but I don't know of anything else I could have done, short of stopping - and that would have caused even more problems. I went to get onto the interstate at a spot that has a rather short entrance ramp, and got on behind this young woman in a little minivan. If I didn't know any better, I'd swear it was somebody learning to drive (just from looking at the driver - seemed quite young). Anyway, she proceeds down the entrance ramp at about 30, maybe 35 tops. Followed it all the way to where it merges into traffic doing the same speed. She wouldn't go any faster, so I couldn't, and there were cars in the lane next to me so I couldnn't get over. Only thing I could think of to do - and I hate to do this, and hate it when other people do, too - was tap the horn to warn everybody that I was there. This, of course, freaked Ms. minivan, and she goes veering off onto the shoulder (and stopped. she was shook up, but looked OK), which was not my intention at all. Fortunately everything came out OK, though it scared the hell out of me, and I can't imagine how *she* felt. Sorry 'bout that.

When I am behind people like that, I come to a stop at the beginning of the on ramp so I can get up to speed after they finished their clusterfvck of a merge.

Around here people STOP on the onramp. These people should have their licenses revoked and then be shot to prevent them from further infecting the human gene pool. Its an onramp, not an intersection you tards.

There's one person that lives near my house, that I occasionally get stuck behind that maintains a 35MPH maximum speed until the yellow line turns white on the onramp (which is 50 feet from the onramp) and then speeds upto 45MPH before taking a half mile to get upto 70. At first I thought it might have been because they had an old Nissan compact pickup. Then they got a new Titan. Nope, same thing. Guy is just an asshat. You should NOT have 4 people stuck behind you in two miles on a rural road at 5AM. You should NOT have a big rig on the brakes on the freeway because you decided to drive like a parade float up the onramp. You should NOT have a bus, or a crane doing the same. You're putting everyone around you at risk.

If you don't have the ability to get onto a highway properly, you shouldn't be driving. The on-ramps in Chicago are super short, but you have to deal with it and just get in. I've gotten onto the freeway / express many times behind people like that, and it's very dangerous for everyone behind them.

same here, unless there's a *reason* to be crawling (accidents, people rubbernecking because of said accident, construction work, etc.)

Thing is the Speed limit is 70, and with an average speed of traffic between 80-90 when flowing, a tool-box doing 40Mph might as well be stopped. :|

Glad I have a fast car to hang back and boost past them when safe to do so.

you do realize that sometimes its impossiable to NOT stop oin an onramp, at certian onramps on certian roads just merging in would cause a major fing accedent

Why do we even have onramps then! Why not just put a stop sign there if its so impossible.

I agree if some one hoses your speed like Mwildings case there's not much you can do.

People that drive in the right hand lane through an onramp area should be prepared to deal with merging traffic, IMO. Its not like they didn't know it was coming.

so many highways populated by people doing 80+ with onramps that are nonexistent (read: stop sign, 5 feet of pavement to get going) So, you learn how to merge, or you die

yea and in major cities where bumper to bumper traffic is moveing at 70+MPH, you either have to be GOD behind the wheel and pray that you dont cause a TA when you merge OR, slow down/ stop and wait for an opening

My personal favorite is traffic slowing to 30mph because people are braking to see the accident scene on the OTHER side of the interstate..
