PSA: Don't compile the kernel using an Atom CPU

Doesn't take long to compile an OpenBSD kernel on an atom. 😉

On my Core 2 Duo laptop it usually took between 45 min to 1 hour.

It took 4 hours and 12 minutes using an Atom CPU.

And I was just thinkng about installing Funtoo (Gentoo) on my netbook. Well, that's definitely ain't going to happen!

Well I used to compile on my development box 😛. That was a donated PIII 533 mhz box overclocked to 780mhz with 196MB of RAM.

It took 1.5 hours just to compile the newest build of the ISPConfig control panel, and I would sometimes have to do that 4 times a day. That was time consuming lol. I finally got a P4 rig to do it, 2.8Ghz with hyper threading, and it did it in 10-15 minutes.

If you're trying to build all the modules, I could imagine it takes a while.

Which is just one reason why you should stick to distro packaged kernels. There's virtually zero reaons to compile your own these days.

this. why compile your own if youre using commodity hardware? whatever you do to the kernel...the atom isnt going to be but so damn fast.

Sabayon does this already, and it's built upon Gentoo..Same as lvl3 install (If I remember the stages of installation properly, anyhoo)

That's got to suck when you wait that long only to get a syntax error for something really stupid like forgetting a semicolon lol.

And I thought my UO server took long to compile, used to take 10 minutes now it's about 1 minute since my last upgrade. WAY less code obviously, comparing a server app to a full blown OS kernel here. 😛

I was compiling some stuff on a 300MHz geode a while back... was painful.

I compiled sage mathematics recently on a 1.5Ghz Pentium M. That took about 8 hours to finish. There's an interesting anecdote in the build docs about how it took around 2 weeks on an android phone.
