What am I (a US citizen) supposed to be doing when the Canadian National Anthem is playing?
As a Canadian citizen living in the US, I stand respectfully and quietly like everyone else for any national anthem.

I am not an American, but as a matter of respect towards the country. I would still stand still and make sure respect the national anthem. No matter what belief one would have about the country. This one is a must.
PS: I am also amused to see the way American flag is pretty much used for everyting from scarf to bikini, which in my opinion is not right.

I've refused to stand for the pledge back in highschool, during the fight against segregation. The men who gave their lives in the Revolution, WWl or WWll died so I can reject all those crooks in Washington. I love and hate what I see in this country. I'm more Red, White and Blue than you will ever be. I love this country, you all only love yourselves. I was born here and think it's an honor and a responsibility. A serious responsibility, not just a romantic dance off to Iraq. I'd gladly give up my life to honor all those who have done so before me, but Bush, Cheney, the house and Senate and Obama, if he continues down this insane course can kiss my A a$$

While I agree with the OP that failing to render honor to the American Flag is disrespectful, I also know that there are individuals in this country who have no honor to this country based upon their individual beliefs. And because of the men and women serving in uniform today and in the past have given themselves to protect that honor, I cannot in good sense force my beliefs upon those who will not listen.
In short, I will render appropriate honor to the American Flag and try not to look down my nose at those who fail to.
I was in the Navy for 9 years. I do what I do because I was ordered to. And now I do it because I want to.
One of the most important rights I protected (and I believe in) is that folks dont have to cry for their country or get all wrapped up in the flag.
They do what they want. And that freedom is much more important that a song or a piece of cloth.
Symbols are just that: Symbols. They are freedom. Excercising freedom is what matters.
I like that we live in a country where people can question their government and interpret it as they see fit. We seem to have lost a lot of that since the attacks of September 11th.
If you get all bent out of shape over a flag you are missing the big picture. The flag will just be a memory of things past if you start with the "You-have-to-believe-this" nonsense.
EDIT:
Sorry for the rant. Looks like 5 other people beat me to it. Several of which were servicemen.

BTW on a related funny topic... in Texas Highschools now they have to say the "Texas Pledge" after the Pledge of Allegiance.
It's pretty hilarious cause its a haiku sounding pledge...
"Honor the Texas flag
I pledge allegiance to the
Texas, one.
Indivisible."
The pledge of allegiance to the Texas state flag is
"Honor the Texas flag; I pledge allegiance to thee, Texas, one state under God, one and indivisible."

I just want to say that you servicemen and women that have said this are incredible. You are like the citizen-scholar-soldiers of old. Unfortunatley so many in our nation have slowly wrapped themselves in a false flag while destroying the very foundation of what makes our country one of the greatest and freest on Earth.
Thank you for your service, intelligence, and for defending and upholding both with your physical and mental prowess what freedom in America really is.

All your patriotic posturing is just a bunch more bricks in the wall. You are a zombie slave serving a handful of mega billionaires on wall street, or behind the walled gateted communities they wouldn't let you into to clean their toilets or pools. I thought the community here at anandtech were a lot smarter than that. There is a river of shit a mile wide and a mile deep flowing out of Washington, since the eighteenth century. You stand up straight and proud at the raising of the flag, but you need to understand we're all being ground down by the enormity of all that's happening in this world. Were all ants in a pile of 6.7 billion. Washington doesn't have the time to worry about you or any of the rest of us, unless your name is Paris Hilton or something.
Don't stop fighting, what you feel is true, but you are being taken for a ride. Demand more , demand excellence from our leaders, you aren't getting it. Don't worship a flag, a graven image, or any likeness of one. There are people all over the world who hold a similar feeling you do they love their countries, think theirs is the best , people in Canada, Iran and even France.
Take a deep hit of fresh air and listen to - Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall, and relax.

You are like a young Prussian Lieutenant in the early 1800's. All dressed up in gold braid and patent leather boots up to your ass. Twisting your almost fully mature waxed mustache, bragging to all the debutantes at the ball, there is no goal higher than dyeing for your country.
You should move to North Korea, there children are taught how to stand when ever any National Anthem is played. Everybody in blue pants, white shirts and red scarves. All smiling in spite of their hunger and government issued shoes that don't fit.
Is that what you want to see here?

You aren't ever going to be able to change anything, but at least know when you are being lied to.
