FDA Confirms CALL7 Investigation Of Zicam

DENVER -- In February, 2004 CALL7 Investigator John Ferrugia began investigating Zicam after a KMGH employee said she had lost her sense of smell after using it. The Food and Drug Administration began its own investigation of complaints from around the country and is now warning consumers that Zicam nasal spray can permanently damage users? sense of smell.

The FDA said consumers should stop using Zicam Cold Remedy nasal gel and related products immediately.

The FDA said about 130 consumers reported a loss of smell after using Zicam, since 1999.

Where should I use it then?

The nasal spray? You should not use it at all. Immediately return it to your local drug store.

You may use this anandtech post as authorization to return :)

130 customers out of the millions of customers using it? Yeah, like it's really a problem, considering there are other pharmaceuticals on the market that cause upset stomach, headache, nausea, diarrhea, nose bleeds, migraines, and anal fucking leakage?

You do realize that this is the number of people that found the FDA site and/or some other way to file their compliant. They also took the time to follow up etc?

I am willing to bet there are way more than that. Kinda like the old rule if you see 1 roach there are 10 others hiding. Heck at my last job they pulled a drug after 2 people died out of many. And even then there was no 100% proof the drug did it. But I guess they should have just left the drug out there till hundreds? thousands? Died?

I'd rather get any of those affects instead of permanent loss of smell. Sense of smell and sense of taste are tied together pretty closely as well.

It might only be a problem with a particular batch or two.

Use Flonase instead. I think that's what it is called. There is something else that my brother uses but I can't remember what it is.

They will just mark it as a possible side effect and then continue selling it.

Oh is it? He does use it for allergies, but I figured it would help with cold symptoms as well. My bad.
