I liked AVG's link scanner but had to switch over to MSE since it is much lighter. I didn't have any major issues with AVG while I used it.

I had issues with AVG when updating it a couple of weeks ago. So I switched to Avira Free.

And please stop hogging resources while you're at it.

What do you consider hogging of resources? 14MB? 25MB?

I've got more problems with Firefox and Opera being resource hogs.....FF, 5 windows open, total of 12 tabs across those windows, taking 454MB of memory. Opera, running one window, two tabs, 168MB of memory.....although it is streaming ESPN radio in one of those tabs.

AV products are rarely the "resource hogs" that most seem to think they are.......just people perpetuating FUD these days.

It messed up the wife's computer so I ended up uninstalling and reinstalling. I will look into MSE tonight. My computer seems fine.

Both machines are running Win7 x64.

Norton Internet Security 2011 > any other av software

this, and you can get a 12-18 month license on ebay or other oem sites for like $15. My computer is worth a buck and change a month.

plus MSE mandates submission of computer id that they "promise" will "try" not to send them personal info about you, but you know, if it does, they will like totally ignore it.

The first clusterfuck I had with AVG was when linkscanner got introduced. I suddenly had a gazillion customers calling their machines stopped responding on the internet.

What are you talking about? What's a 'computer id'? If it's your Windows licence key then they already have it, unless you're running an illegal copy of Windows. Please explain.

we run Trend on all of our 500+ servers.

We took a different approach. Our servers are isolated on their own network with a firewall only allow essential services to communicate with them.

Never had a single virus on our servers in my entire time here (over 5 years). Of course we don't have as many windows servers (I think we have 50+ Linux, 10 novell, and 8 or 9 windows 2003 servers).

Seems silly to me.

I use MSE and tell everyone I know and everyone whose computer I fix to use it.

Used to use avast but got sick of re-registering every year.

I'll go with the lesser known but quality AV products. Anything with the name MS on it is going to be widely used and therefore a specific target for virus makers looking for maximum impact.

I use MSE now, but I used to use Avira free and I liked it a lot, too. What made me switch was Avira free's persistent failure to update its definitions. If Avira has fixed that, I'd recommend either it or MSE, as I consider both to be excellent.

AVG is so 10 years ago. MSE is a superior free AV. Anyone paying for AV software right now is simply throwing money away.

Especially on something like Norton.
