PSA: chocolate milk is better than Gatorade for after a workout

I know there's a few of you out there who are fitness-minded, and I just thought I would mention that studies have shown chocolate milk to be a better recovery drink than Gatorade. The reason is because chocolate milk contains protein, which Gatorade does not, and contains one gram of protein for every four grams of carbohydrates, which has been shown to be the optimal level for restoring your glycogen stores and repairing muscle fibers.

Now, Gatorade (or Powerade or whatever) is still better for during exercise because protein can cause stomach problems while you're working out, and I still prefer diluted Gatorade during the day to stay hydrated while avoiding hyponatremia (over-hydration and low electrolyte levels) and after a regular run or bike, you really don't need protein, but after a grueling workout, the protein helps immensely.

Ensure and those meal replacement shakes are also excellent post-workout recovery drinks, but are much more expensive. You can make your own chocolate milk for a fraction of the cost of specialty sports drinks and it works just as well.

Also, chocolate milk has calcium, so it's better for you in general anyway.

Does absorbing calcium after a workout do anything? I would guess it does, but I haven't heard of any products that market this...

The Abs Diet is big on 8 oz. of chocolate milk as a snack after a workout. Gotta get the 1% or reduced fat though.

Heh, just reading the topic made me think of that "Love Hurts" MadTV clip where they were drinking and bathing in liquid cookie dough!

Or you could just mix whey + dextrose. The carbs in milk are rather slow absorbing, which is not ideal for post workout. You want something that will replenish glycogen quickly.

Also a lot of people seem to have this misconception that whey protein is expensive. I don't know where you are buying from, but if you buy from either of the following two places:

All the Whey
DPS Nutrition (get the ON brand)

You will find that in terms of grams of protein/$, you cannot beat whey protein. I actually calculated it out for a variety of high protein foods (chicken, steak, beef, cottage cheese, tuna, etc.) and found that the whey came out on top. The second closest was tuna.

I love how so many people have been fooledby the dairy industry into thinking milk is such a great way to get calcium, when there are so many better sources that dont require you to ingest cow puss.

I like cow puss. Possum puss is also tasty.

well the whole reason they say chocolate milk is better then gatorade is because it has roughly a 4:1 carb: protein ratio. after a workout it is believed that you generally have about 30 minutes for your body to "super absorb" these nutrients quickly so you recover faster and with less soreness. however there are certain sport drinks out there that are better for you after a workout like Endurox.

Yup, too bad Endurox and all those other recovery drinks taste like bile-fortified cat poo. I have a gallon canister of Powerbar Recovery and it tastes like puke and gives me heartburn.

You have to chug obscene amounts of straight water to suffer from hyponatremia (Gallons). Do you honestly believe your finely tuned body operates better during the day on 50% gatorade than plain water?

Yup!

No, actually, I'm more concerned about keeping my blood sugar at a constant level which is why I drink the diluted Gatorade, but I had a brain fart and talked about elecrolytes instead. However, when I do drink just water I tend to get orthostatic hypotension a lot more.

Constant oral intake of simple sugars is the worst way to keep up your energy. And If your kidneys can't handle the water, you should see an endocrinologist you may be adrenally insufficent (addison's disease)

Well, I'm going by what an exercise physiologist said while giving a talk to my college's sports teams. He said that after a meal, your blood sugar spikes sharply, then drops sharply as insulin is released, and the drop in blood sugar is what causes post-meal drowsiness. He recommended drinking 50% diluted Gatorade to keep blood sugars at a constant level throughout the day, and he has a PhD in ExPhys and holds many records for our school so I believe him.
