I've heard this argument at least a half dozen times on this board.

During the escape scene, he tosses the slack chain OVER the rope and slides down. Anyone who says otherwise is a moron.

Captain Sparrow does NOT defy the laws of physics

If you can't make out the chain in the screen caps, I will be glad to highlight the chain in bright red for your convenience.

heh, i wondered about this as well when i watched the movie. :)

then i remembered that there were pirates who turned into undead at night because of a curse treasure, and realized there were bigger arguments at hand.... ;)

Can those pictures get any more blurry? Maybe I won't be able to tell what movie it is next time. Thanks.

You can't see anything in those pictures.

What is it supposed to be illustrating? He had a chain that, at each end, was attached to one of his wrists. Somehow, he managed to get the chain over a rope while still attached to his wrists. If you're trying to show that there's some way he can do that without the rope and chain passing through each other, you need much better pictures.

I think the pictures are supposed to show that he made a loop with the chain and threw the end of the loop over the rope and grabbed it, allowing him to slide down. It's hard to describe, maybe someone can draw a picture.

I don't know if that's what happened in the movie or not though.

He didn't. The chain was long enough that he could loop it and toss the slack over the rope. He then grabbed the loop of slack (which is now hanging down on the other side of the rope) and slid down.

Look at the 8th picture down. He has swung the chain over the rope and the momentum of the chain picoting on the rope has enogh power to wrap around his hand. Never seen anyone wrap someone or something with a whip?

On a related note, how come he didn't die when the curse was broken? All the other pirates who had sustained fatal injuries collapsed as soon as it was broken.
