I needed one and I was at the hardware store buying glue and looking around (How can you not wander around at a hardware store?) and I saw a Maglite flashlight. I had heard of them and heard they were good. A bit expensive ($16 for the mini), but I know that a quality tool pays for itself many times over.

All I can say is wow. Not only is this thing neat looking, and not only is the light adjustable, but this thing can shine light through my hand.

If you don't have one, you should.

A few x-mas ago I got kit. Big mag, a medium size one and a mini. What a gift. One for the car, one around my desk for pc stuff and the big one for the house.

Is a great investment.

Mag's are great as donor bodies, if you want to be blown away by a light the size of a MiniMag check out a Surefire G2 Nitrolon.

I have a 5D in each of my vehicles. I keep it there for parking situations. If I come back to my car and find that someone has carelessly dinged my door with theirs, I show them what a ding really is.

PS I've only had to do this once, with my last truck.

For actual lighting, Surefires are the way to go.

A fellow MP who used to be in my unit searched high and low and finally found a 6 D-cell Maglite. It was hilarious to see the thing hanging off of this pistol belt. It was as long as his MP club and extended down past his knee. He wasn't very short either. That thins was bright as hell compared to the average 3 or 4 D-cell that everyone else on the shift carried.

Fixed. Just be prepared to spend 10-20x.

Seriously, there are much better lights for not much more (definitely sub-$30, but I don't remember specific ones).

Got 1AAA, 2AA, and 3D Maglites. Bought them from Costco. Good stuff.

Maglites actually suck. There are far better flashlights out there, but they will cost you.

Granted, maglites are better than 99% of the garbage plastic 'lights out there.

I had placed an order for a 6D maglite with HSN during a hot deal, but I was late and my order got cancelled. :(

For a bit they actually made an 8D version. A friend of mine has one, that thing is huge.

I can't imagine that. Hell, he usually held the 6D like a firehose most of the time, 8D would be even funnier to see.

Aren't LED flashlights better?

Not universally.

You have to compare lumens vs. battery life ...

I mean, there are too many different LEDs, and combinations of LEDs.. to say for certain.

An LED equipped flashlight will generally produce slightly less lumens, with greatly increased battery and nearly infinite bulb life.

If anyone is interested in a good deal on new Surefire G2's, PM me for contact info and prices from a reputable dealer.

Inova T3 > Maglite, and it's only $50. Well worth the cost for longer battery life, LED brightness, and machined aluminum casing.
