Too busy right now, but you can go on autotrader.com and pick out examples all day of dealers doing this. Or worse yet, they'll just guess. I've found cars before that were listed as "5-speed" so I'm thinking it's a manual trans car and exactly what I've been looking for. Then I call and it turns out that it's a 4-speed automatic and they just "thought it felt like 5 gears". It's horrible.

just to add more useless info most US automakers and their auto's are actually lacking a gear, IE 4 spd is actually a 3 spd with lockup tq converter and they call it another gear for some dumb reason.

Rowing gears makes the drive more fun anyways, so buy a stick equipped vehicle.

It doesn't have to just be sports cars. People do it with all types of cars. Saying you have a 5-speed doesn't nesecarily imply that you have a manual transmission. I've even seen the reverse plenty of times where people will say they have a 5-speed, and it actually is an automatic. With 5 speed automatic and 5 speed manual transmissions being so common, take an extra second to say or type which one it is.

"My car has a 5 speed"
"Oh, auto or manual?"
"Auto"
"Why didn't you say that in the first place?"

See that's interesting because I've owned/driven numerous domestic automatics. Every single one had four distinct gears, and then you could feel the torque converter lockup for lower RPM cruising.

I can't say I'm 100% sure on this, but I'm ready to call BS.

Although I always like jumping on the bandwagon, I actually have to back up the OP on this one.

When searching for my latest car, I was very annoyed by the adds on Autotrader and cars.com. They would describe automatic transmissions as "automanual" or "6-speed", making it dificult to search for only manual transmission cars.

I wouldn't get my panties in a bunch and make a post about it, but ya, I was annoyed.

Well when there calling it a "5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION" I hope won wood pay attention too the entire description, and bee a wear of what it clearly states after 5-Speed. If won was to have a steak in this conversation I wood be ready to admit, won wood halve to assume they are going to be reeding the description of the transmission. If they did knot take the thyme to fully reed the entire description then obvious they wood halve a big problem if they did knot know how too drive a stick. Ore if they did knot, hopefully they wood no the next thyme to reed the description a bit closer.

the reason why "standard transmission" mean manual is because back in the day the trans that came with the car, if you did not order an automatic, was a manual. Hence its the standard transmission on a vehicle.

The saying is still around even if the "standard" trans today is an automatic.
