PSA: 2017 LG OLED TVs support native 1080p120 and improved HDR input lag

Looks like LG is listening to gamers (or at least it preparing for 120fps video content to arrive).

IMO the 60Hz input cap was the one thing holding back OLED from being a truly excellent gaming display, but this is a bit of a game changer as the 120Hz refresh takes better advantage of OLED's inherently low response time. Can't wait for a sale on that 65-incher...

Oh wow. I wish they had this 9 months ago when I bought my Sammy VA (KS8000) panel. Then again, this is over 2.5x the price of what I paid.

21ms lag is in the upper tier for a TV in general. But for OLED, it's the best ever. Also both "Gamer" and "PC" have this low input lag, which isn't the case with my Sammy.

1920x1080 120Hz is nice. OLED at 120hz must be very smooth, probably the best non backlight strobing motion available currently (and without strobing issues). I'd have done ugly things for some Freesync though...

"Automatic Brightness Limiter" looks much less intrusive here too. I'd want to check it out though. This is the main issue I have with OLED (and banding). With relatively low input lag, 120hz option, and better ABL, OLED may finally be ready. Though I'd have to see if it has banding issues too.

Now please don't forget your progress here, LG. I remember a few years ago that Sony was king for the gamers because of the low input lag of a certain model, but later years never got there again. If LG keeps these specs as a baseline and only improves, then I look forward to new models even more.

That's 21ms input lag for 60Hz operation. Theoretically, input lag for 120Hz should be closer to 11ms, but rtings responded to this very topic:

i guys! Thanks for the incredible and helpful reviews. Few quick questions:
Are there any artifacts at all when doing 1080p @ 120hz?
Can it do 1080p @ 120hz in 4:4:4?
Is the input lag in 1080p @ 120hz half of what it is @ 60hz?
I'd like to see input lag measurements at 120hz since it seems that more and more TVs are starting to support it.
Thanks again!!

You're welcome, glad you like the site!
There are no artifacts when showing 1080p @ 120 Hz, and no frame skipping either. 1080p @ 120 Hz is actually officially supported in the TV's EDID.
We tested 1080p @ 120 Hz with RGB color and it passed our Chroma 4:4:4 test when the input was set to PC.
We use the industry standard Leo Bodnar tool to test input lag, and it unfortunately only allows testing 60 Hz input lag. We expect the 120 Hz input lag to be lower but likely not half the 60 Hz lag.

Dammit. I decided on a 2016 a few months ago because the 2017 upgrades weren't worth the cost. Had they come out of the gate with 120hz that would have changed my mind.

Edit: Can't read, only at 1080p. Meh, nice update but no big deal.

Not this again. You won't notice a difference at all because its a TV.
This comment shouldn't make me cry but it does.

Can't wait for 4k 120hz OLED Native HDTVs. Also can't wait for the projectors to go above 60 hz at HD resolutions (Will this ever happen? 1080p 120hz projector? Common....)

Just throw Freesync on HDTVs now!
