My snack at work routinely consists of 1 orange and 1.5 ounces of almonds, along with 2-3 brazil nuts. I do this twice a day.

I ran out of almonds but my new order came in today. So today I just had 10-15 brazil nuts at 10:30. By Noon, My stools were soft and I have bona fide diarrhea.

It is a symptom os selenosis. Too much selenium. The whole point of the brazil nuts is the selenium, which helps chelate and cleanse heavy metals. 6 nuts a day is fine, but not 12. The recommended upper limit is 400mcg a day, I probably got 800-1000mcg in that one snack.

I will not do this again, lesson learned.

Since selenium is a cure for mercury poisoning, feel free to go overload on fish now.

wait how much selenium is too much?

Oh shit...I just looked it up. RDA recommendation is 55 micrograms. According to fitday, my daily intake for the last year has averaged around 1019%. I've noticed the soft stool thing. I wonder if that's why.

While Brazil nuts are full of nutrients, consuming too many can have a negative affect on your health. These nuts are incredibly high in selenium and while it is a necessary nutrient, too much selenium can cause stomach upset, hair and nail loss, irritability and fatigue. While the specific amount of selenium in each nut can vary it is estimated that one Brazil nut provides 160% of an adult?s daily need for selenium. One Brazil nut a day can easily fulfill the body?s selenium requirement. Ten Brazil nuts provide 15 times the amount of selenium recommended. Since toxicity levels can be seen at 8 times the recommended amount, consuming too many Brazil nuts on a regular basis could result in excess selenium in the body.
