Yeah this was *really* surprising given how badly the PC version of tressfx runs...

Well Mantle vs DX. Low level coding vs software level coding on top of static hardware and OS/drivers vs million configurations both hardware and OS configs and drivers. I would assume that's likely the major reason why devs can push similar visuals techniques from hardware that technically doesn't support it.
Perhaps it's like what Crytek was able to achieve from PS3 hardware, it's not the same thing but visually it worked out very similar.

Everything got posibilities. It just doesnt mean it becomes anything. And so far TressFX is (still) a Tomb Raider only thing as far as I know. And no announce of anything to change that.

4 years ago OpenCL was the big dog and we would have OpenCL physics with Havok, Bullet and Pixelux. Never happend.
On consoles, the PS3 lacked unified shaders, and the X360 lacked the compute power. OpenCL physics would only have worked well on the PC platform where there is plenty of GPU compute to spare. The story is likely to be different on these new consoles.

Why would you get it on an inferior console if your PC will easily handle it at a higher IQ and framerate? D: Not to mention you can get it for $10 or less on PC...

Because consoles are simple and straightforward and that's what majority of my friends use. I always buy new consoles when they release 😛

Also I don't care about prices

Console are barley playing games at 1080p@ 30fps
So imo there will be some sacrifices in the quality to run to Tree Fx.

They are probably using tressfx 2.0.

Seems will have some improvments in the render comparing with pc version. Hoping this changes come to pc.

Lara Croft presented in unprecedented high definition detail:
- An all new Lara model created to take advantage of the power of next-gen consoles
- TRESS FX technology that delivers realistic hair simulation and motion with every strand being physically active
- Shader and lighting reworked to showcase the raw physicality of Lara's journey through sweat, mud, and blood materials and effects

A physical world put in motion thanks to brand new hardware architecture:
- The world has been dynamically brought to life using complex physical world simulation on trees, foliage, cloth, weather, lighting and effects
- All texture resolutions have been created at 4x resolution for maximum resolution and detail
- In-game characters, enemies and destructability have been enhanced for added depth and realism
- Subsurface scattering technology implemented to capture the most physically accurate lighting simulation and deliver a great sense of believability
- Native 1080p gameplay gives outstanding visual fidelity and showcases the beauty of Yamatai in all its high definition glory

Interesting, I hadn't seen that TressFX 2.0 talk. Does it mention whether there is any regression in image quality?

The PhysX fur in the Witcher 3 also looks impressive. I am very happy to see progress being made with simulated hair as it really enhances the immersion.

I don't prefer either to the pc version model. Looked a lot better than what I see now. I feel like the previous model looks more realistic.

Ehh, she looks completely different 🙁 I got very used to the original one, I hope the next installment is a bit further in the future, so that can explain facial changes. It reminds me of the change Ubisoft did between ACB and ACR - Desmond looked distinctly different. Here it's completely different!

EDIT: I checked around and I think that's just a really weird shot, HurleyBird. Looking at PS4 footage, she doesn't really look too different from what I remember from the PC version - which is good 🙂

Quite ironic if they increase details now with the PS4 version, compared to PC version. Things that would never have been any trouble for a PC to run, like even higher texture resolution. Why didn't they do that in the first place for PC?

I guess it just shows you how much PC is not a priority.

Maybe they had another 11 months to work on it?And apparently in some of those months, improvements were made to things like TressFX.
They could have made the PC version better too, if they delayed it by 11 months.

I would bet that some, if not most, of the improvements came from their work on the sequel and were added to the PS4 and Xbox One versions to help differentiate if from the PS3/X360 versions in an effort to convince owners of the current version to purchase it again. I'm just wondering if they'll add this to the PC version, either in a patch or a new release (hopefully at a discount for current owners). I really like the new realistic model as the current one looks to much like an idealized character rather than a real woman.
